Asian Archery Championships 2023: India finish with three gold, seven medals

Parneet Kaur and Aditi Gopichand Swami returned with two gold medals each.

The Indian archery contingent ended their Asian Archery championships 2023 campaign on a bright note by winning seven medals – gold (3), silver (1), and bronze (3). Of the seven medals, the compound archery once again stood apart with a total of six medals while recurve contingent won the other medal. The tournament had Paris Olympic quota on offer but none of the recurve archers capitalized on the opportunity.

Women’s recurve team came close to securing a quota but lost in a crunch semifinals encounter. However, they went onto finish third by winning the bronze-medal playoff match. Meanwhile, the men’s recurve team bowed out from the quarterfinals.

Parneet Kaur (women’s compound individual and team)

Teenager Parneet Kaur managed to do the unthinkable by beating compatriot and multiple times World Championships medalist Jyothi Surekha Vennam in the women’s singles compound. After the scores were tied at 145, Parneet rose to the occasion and scored 9 to Jyothi’s 8. This was Parneet’s first Asian Championships medal in the individual section.

Prior to the individual final, she alongside Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Aditi Swami Gopichand clinched gold in the team event. With this the trio attained the coveted world no.1 spot in the world rankings.

Aditi Gopichand Swami (mixed compound and team)

Like Parneet Kaur, Aditi Gopichand Swami also won two gold medals. She started her campaign by combining with U-21 world champion Priyansh to win gold in mixed doubles and then recorded another top place finish in the women’s team event. The Indian duo defeated Thailand’s Kanoknapus Kaewchomphu and Lertruangsilp Nawayut 156-151 in the gold medal match and emerged victorious.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam (women’s compound individual and team)

The Asian Games 2023 gold medallist, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, won two medals – each in women’s individual and team events. In the women’s individual, Jyothi lost to Parneet Kaur in nail biting final after the scores were tied at the end of five series. Jyothi lost plot in the shootoff and settled for silver.

Abhishek Verma (men’s compound individual and team)

Experienced Abhishek Verma won two bronze medals in individual and team event in men’s compound archery. In the individual section, Abhishek registered a narrow win 147-146 over Joo Jaehoon of South Korea. Moving ahead in the team event, he combined with Prathamesh Fuge and Priyansh to finish third. The semifinals contest had several twists and turns as the decision of referee’s were reversed at the end of regulation time.

Tisha Punia, Bhajan Kaur, Ankita Bhakat (women’s recurve team)

The trio of Tisha Punia, Bhajan Kaur and Ankita Bhakat won India’s only recurve medal at the Asian Archery Championships 2023. The trio beat Chinese Taipei (5-1) in the bronze medal playoff match. The Indian team was two rounds away from securing a Olympic quota but lost in a crucial semifinals clash. Later on, Ankita Bhakat finished quarterfinalist in the Asian Archery qualifying tournament for Paris.
