India continues to remain at fourth place with 86 medals.

The 19th Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, continues with 38 events lined up with medals for the taking on Day 12 (October 5) of the continental showpiece.

While China continues to build on its lead, which is now out of reach for the other participating nations, the positions of countries lower down the medals table are often changing hands. The host has accumulated 333 medals so far, and its haul of gold medals stands at 179.

India’s compound men’s and women’s teams bagged two golds in the archery events on Thursday. The women’s team pipped Taiwan by a solitary point, beating them 230-229. HS Prannoy overcame his injury sustained earlier this week to move past Malaysian shuttler Lee Zii Jia to give India its first men’s singles badminton medal since 1982

Indian squash players contributed gold and silver in the mixed doubles and men’s singles events. In Kabaddi, the Indian men posted an easy win against Japan and will now face Pakistan in the semifinals on October 6th. The women’s kabaddi team has their semifinal round tomorrow against Nepal.

There is a potential opportunity for the Indian contingent to earn another gold when the national hockey team take on Japan at 4 PM IST tomorrow.

China is inching towards a count of 200 in its gold medal tally. The hosts boast of a total of 333 medals. Japan, with 158 medals in total, has a slim lead over third-placed South Korea, with a total of 157 to its name on Japan’s heels. Japan has 44 golds to South Korea’s thirty-three.

India has also won a considerable medal count at fourth place with 86 medals, comprising 21 gold, 32 silver and 33 bronze. The next three spots remain unchanged since yesterday, and they go to Uzbekistan at fifth with 60 medals and 19 gold, Taiwan at sixth with 53 medals and 15 gold and Thailand rounds off the top seven with 51 medals and 10 gold.

As the 19th Asian Games winds down, there’s still an opportunity for the top seven to increase their medal count. We may yet witness some changes in the order on the medals table, barring China of course.
