Athletics Day 5 Wrap: India win six medals, Vithya breaks 42-year-old National Record; relay teams make finals at Asian Games 2026

India has now won 19 medals in athletics
India enjoyed another prolific day in athletics at the Asian Games 2026, adding six medals to its tally on Monday.
Murali Sreeshankar, Yashvir Singh and Gulveer Singh won silver, while Vithya Ramraj, Rohit Yadav and Parul Chaudhary secured bronze medals.
The six medals came across the men’s long jump, men’s javelin throw, men’s 1500m, women’s 400m hurdles and women’s 5000m. India also progressed in the mixed 4x100m and men’s 4x400m relays.

Murali Sreeshankar wins long jump silver

Murali Sreeshankar produced a best effort of 8.07m to win silver in the men’s long jump. China’s Shi Yuqi took gold with 8.17m, while Uzbekistan’s Anvar Anvarov won bronze with 8.06m.
Sreeshankar had three valid jumps, with his second attempt of 8.07m proving decisive. He suffered an injury after his fourth attempt and did not take his final two jumps.
Gulveer Singh bags 1500m silver
Gulveer Singh added another silver medal to his collection after clocking a personal best of 3:36.72 in the men’s 1500m final. Japan’s Kazuya Iizawa won gold in a Games Record of 3:36.35, while compatriot Naoki Mori took bronze in 3:37.92.
Gulveer had already won silver in the men’s 10,000m earlier in the Games and now has two individual silver medals.

Yash Vir Singh, Rohit Yadav deliver javelin double
India secured a podium double in the men’s javelin throw, with Yash Vir Singh winning silver and Rohit Yadav taking bronze. Yashvir registered a personal best of 85.72m, while Rohit produced 84.35m.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage won gold with 88.55m. Yashvir’s PB helped him secure his first Asian Games medal, while Rohit added another bronze to India’s athletics tally.
Vithya Ramraj breaks PT Usha’s 42-year-old national record
Vithya Ramraj won bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles with a personal best of 54.75 seconds. More importantly, the mark broke PT Usha’s 42-year-old national record of 55.42 seconds, set at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Vithya improved the record by 0.67 seconds to become India’s new national record holder. UAE’s Kareem M took gold in a Games Record of 54.31 seconds, while Kazakhstan’s Zems A won silver in 54.58.
Anu Raghavan also produced a personal best of 55.88 seconds to finish fifth.

Parul Chaudhary wins second bronze
Parul Chaudhary added another bronze to her Asian Games medal tally after finishing third in the women’s 5000m final in 15:14.61. Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won gold in 15:10.18, while Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka took silver in 15:11.65.
Parul had already won bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase earlier in the Games. Seema finished sixth in the 5000m final with 15:35.06.
Women’s discus throw
Seema narrowly missed out on another medal, finishing fourth with a personal best of 59.88m. Sanya Yadav finished eighth with 49.90m.
Mixed 4x100m relay
India qualified for the mixed 4x100m relay final after finishing second in Heat 2 in 41.54 seconds. China won the heat in 41.52 seconds, with the top three teams progressing automatically.
Santhosh Tamilarasan finishes seventh
Santhosh Tamilarasan finished seventh in the men’s 400m hurdles final with 49.95 seconds. Qatar’s Abderrahman Hemeida won gold in 47.82 seconds, while Japan’s Tomoya Goto and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chengfeng completed the podium.
Avinash Sable finishes fourth
Avinash Sable finished fourth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with 8:21.67, his season-best time. Japan’s Ryuji Miura won gold in a Games Record time of 8:17.36.
Women’s 800m heats
Gowthami Jayaraman finished fourth in her heat in 2:04.31. Pooja progressed to the final from Heat 2 and will compete for a medal on the final day.
Women’s 4x100m relay
India finished fourth in the women’s 4x100m relay final with a season best 43.57 seconds. China won gold in 42.96 seconds, followed by Thailand and Japan.
Men’s 4x400m relay
India qualified for the men’s 4x400m relay final after winning Heat 2 in 3:01.49. Qatar and China also advanced automatically, while Thailand and Korea qualified as the next two fastest teams.
Athletics medal tally after Day 5
India have won 19 athletics medals at the Asian Games 2026 – nine silver and 10 bronze. The six medals won on Day 5 took India’s athletics tally from 13 to 19, with the contingent entering the final day without a gold medal.

What to expect from India on Day 6 of Athletics?
The final day of athletics will feature nine medal events. Kuldeep Kumar and Dev Meena will compete in the men’s pole vault, while Pooja Singh and Supriya Sindigere Basavaraju will contest the women’s high jump. Tanya Chaudhary and Anushka Yadav will feature in the women’s hammer throw.
Pooja will run in the women’s 800m final and Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath in the men’s 800m final. Gulveer Singh and Avinash Sable are listed for the men’s 5000m final. India will also compete in the mixed 4x100m, women’s 4x400m and men’s 4x400m relay finals.
