Quarter-Finals Summary
Korea, Japan, China and Malaysia advanced to the Sudirman Cup 2023 semis after winning their respective quarter-final clashes. While Korea beat Chinese Taipei, Japan came from behind to beat Thailand. Defending champions and 12-time winners China had a comfortable win over Indonesia and Malaysia saw off Denmark.
The day started with Korea taking on Chinese Taipei on court 1, while Japan faced Thailand on the other court at the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre. Korea had a pretty straightforward win as they won the opening mixed doubles fixture in straight games. However, Chou Tien Chen lost his men's singles match against Lee Yun Gyu before An Se Young and the men's doubles pair of Kim Won Ho/Na Sung Seung wrapped up the win.
For Japan and Thailand, it was more dramatic. While Japan also started with a win in mixed doubles albeit in three sets, they lost both the men's and women's singles fixtures. But their world top-10 ranked doubles pair sealed the win, again both the wins coming in three sets.
In the evening clash, China won their first three matches over Indonesia to reach the semis, while Malaysia won three and lost one, a shock defeat for Goh Win Jei. They were helped by Viktor Axelsen's injury that forced him to retire hurt.
