Sudirman Cup: Malaysia's overall record in the tournament
They are three-time medallists in the prestigious tournament.
Malaysia have been a powerhouse in badminton and has produced several great players. They have produced the likes of Lee Chong Wei, Goh Liu Ying (Rio Silver Medalist in XD), Goh V Shem (Rio Silver Medalist in MD), Aron Chia (World Champion in MD) and Lee Zii Jia. However, despite having good players they are yet to reach the final of the Sudirman Cup, progressing to the semi-finals thrice in 18 editions.
Here is a summary of Malaysia's performances in the Sudirman Cup 2023.
Sudirman Cup 2023
Malaysia finished their campaign in the semi-finals and won their third bronze medal in the history of the competition. They started their campaign with a clean sweep over Australia and India. Malaysia then defeated Chinese Taipei 4-1 to claim the top spot. In the quarter-finals, the now three-time bronze medalists defeated Denmark (4-1) to progress to the semi-finals for the third time.
However, they failed to progress any further after losing their semi-final clash 1-3 to South Korea.
Sudirman Cup 2021
Malaysia confirmed their second medal in Sudirman Cup history after defeating Indonesia 3-2 in a fascinating quarter-final tie to reach the semis. Malaysia started their campaign with a shaky win over England as they won 3-2 and avoided a scare. They defeated Egypt 5-0 and lost to Japan 1-4 in the group stage thus finishing second in Group D after the end of the group stages setting up a quarter-final tie against Indonesia, who topped Group C.
In the quarter-finals, Malaysia started strong as Aaron Chia/Soo Wooi Yik defeated the minions in straight games (21-12, 21-15). Lee Zii Jia ensured Malaysia took a 2-1 lead over Indonesia after three matches as he defeated Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (21-11, 21-16). The final touch was given by the XD pair of Cheah/Hoo who defeated Praveen/Melati in three thrilling games (21-19, 9-21, 21-16) and thus confirmed the bronze medal. In the end, Malaysia lost to Japan 1-3 in the semi-finals to finish their campaign.
Sudirman Cup 2009
The Malaysian team started their campaign with a close 2-3 loss to South Korea. After that, they came back stronger as they defeated Hong Kong 4-1 and Denmark 3-2 to qualify for the semi-finals. In the semi-final, they faced China where they lost 0-3 and bowed out of the tournament in style by registering their then best-ever finish in the tournament. It was the first time, Malaysia had qualified for the semi-finals of Sudirman Cup and in the process clinched their first-ever bronze medal.
