The 31-year-old won his maiden medal at BWF World Championships 2023

India’s top ranked men’s singles shuttler HS Prannoy rose to his career-best ranking WR-6 released recently by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The BWF World Championships 2023 bronze medalist jumped three places (from WR-9 to WR-6) to surpass his previous career-nest of WR-7. The 31-year-old has consistently been in top-10 for close a year and with a World Championships medal under his armory he has now solidified his place in the top 10.

This has been one of the most successful season for HS Prannoy – winning his first BWF World Tour title and agonizingly got close to winning another at the Australian Open last month. On the way to the semi-finals at World Championships, HS Prannoy defeated WR-1 Viktor Axelsen in three games and became the only shuttler to stretch Viktor to three games since the 2022 BWF World Championships (considering matches only at World Championships since 2022).

Other Indians in the fray, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Lakshya Sen dropped a place to WR-12, while Kidambi Srikanth retained his WR-20 spot. Lakshya reached the R16 at the World Championships and his compatriot Kidambi Srikanth had a sub-par performance.

In the women’s singles, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu jumped a place to occupy the 14th spot. Despite losing in the opening round to eventual quarter-finalist Nozomi Okuhara, Sindhu gained a spot to move inside the top 15.

Asian champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty retained their No. 2 spot after exiting in the quarter-finals, losing to eventual finalist Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen. Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand rose up by two spots to WR-17 after reaching the pre-quarterfinals at the World Championships.

Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy, despite losing in the opening round, rose one spot to reach WR-32 and continue to remain the top ranked Indian in the mixed doubles.
