Azmatullah Omarzai bowled one wide and one no-ball in his 36-run over against West Indies.

Afghanistan seamer Azmatullah Omarzai entered into the books of an unwanted record as he conceded the joint-most runs (36) in an over in T20I history during the WI vs AFG match at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on Tuesday night.

The fans at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia were thoroughly entertained by Nicholas Pooran’s blitz of 98 runs in 53 balls, which included being part of a 36-run over from Omarzai.

Known for prodigious swing bowling with the new ball, Omarzai was belted in the powerplay by Pooran. His second over – the fourth of the innings – leaked 36 runs. No, six sixes were not hit as this over included a wide that went for a boundary and a no-ball that also went for a boundary. It also included a dot ball.

Omarzai even elicited a false shot from Pooran as the first ball flew over the third-man region for a six via a thick edge after Pooran mistimed his pull. The second delivery, which was a no-ball, was pulled for a four.

Omarzai then went for a bouncer but it was too short and it flew over the head of both Pooran and the wicket-keeper, resulting in five wides. The next delivery was a perfect yorker which Pooran couldn’t hit. On the next delivery, Omarzai missed his line again and conceded four leg byes.

Pooran then slammed two fours and a six to end the over on a high, as Omarzai conceded 36 runs in the over.

West Indies posted 218 runs on the board and then bundled Afghanistan for 114 to remain undefeated in the group stage.
