India have played 13 test matches so far at Sydney’s SCG.
Australia recorded an emphatic 184-run win in one of the all-time greatest Boxing Day tests at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to take a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.
India started the series on a thunderous note, creating history by handing Australia their first-ever test defeat at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Jasprit Bumrah rattled the Aussies with eight wickets, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli starred with centuries in the second innings.
The hosts responded strongly in Adelaide, to continue their unbeaten streak in day-night tests at the venue, by securing a convincing 10-wicket victory, with Travis Head earning Player of the Match award for his blistering century in the first innings.
While we saw exciting cricket in the first two tests, the third test at the Gabba was a drawn contest due to frequent and lengthy rain interruptions. Steve Smith made headlines by ending his lean patch with a gritty hundred in the first innings, while Head blasted another ton.
The most thrilling match of the series was the fourth test at the MCG, where Australia delivered a bowling masterclass to take seven wickets in the final session of the test that was headed towards a draw.
The series will now move to the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney for the fifth test, where India have managed just one win in 13 matches. On that note, let’s look at what happened when India last played a test match in Sydney.
What happened the last time India played a test match at the SCG, Sydney?
India’s last test match in Sydney was the third test of their 2020/21 tour. That test is widely remembered for Ravichandran Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari’s resilient sixth-wicket partnership on day 5 when they batted for 43 overs to secure a draw.
Batting first, Steve Smith led Australia to 338 runs in the first innings through his sensational century (138). In reply, India were 142/3 before three runouts triggered a collapse restricting them to 244 runs.
Australia put up another strong batting display in the second innings and set India a target of 407 runs.
Reduced to 272/5 after 88 overs, India needed to survive another 43 overs to secure a draw. Ashwin, dealing with back problems, and Vihari, struggling with a hamstring issue, showed great determination to help India secure a draw and keep the series 1-1 after the third test.
