Australia opener David Warner scored 178 runs with two half-centuries in the tournament.

One of the favourites to lift the title, Australia suffered a shocking Super 8 exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Placed in Group 1 along with India, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, the Mitchell Marsh-led side were touted to reach the semi-finals at least, having won all their four group stage fixtures.

They hammered Bangladesh in their first Super 8 match. However sloppy fielding and a dismal batting show proved them costly against Afghanistan. Australia lost to Afghanistan for the first time in international cricket. That opened the doors for Afghanistan.

Australia’s loss against India meant Afghanistan only needed to beat Bangladesh to enter the semi-finals, which they did with an 8-run victory (DLS method) in a thrilling contest that was interrupted multiple times by rain.

This exit of the Aussies also brought an end to the glorious career of David Warner in T20Is and international cricket.

Has David Warner retired from international cricket?

Yes, Warner’s 15-year international career came to a close after Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. He had retired from ODIs after the World Cup last year and from test cricket in January this year. He had already previously confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2024 would be his last T20I tournament.

Warner had a decent run in this tournament. He notched up two half-centuries but managed scores of three and six against Afghanistan and India, respectively, both games Australia lost. He finished the tournament with 178 runs at an average of 29 and a strike rate of 139.

The left-handed opener amassed 3277 runs in his T20I career at an average of 33, raising one century and 28 fifties. Warner played a key role in Australia’s triumphant campaign at the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE and bagged the Man of the Tournament award.

On David Warner’s retirement, Josh Hazlewood said, “We’ll [acknowledge] the career that’s been. It’s been unbelievable. We’ll definitely miss him around the group, out in the field and off-field – an amazing all-format career.”

Travis Head said, “He goes down as our best multi-format player. He’ll be missed at the top of the order.”
