The legendary pacer James Anderson made his test debut against Zimbabwe in 2003.

James Anderson the evergreen English pacer, has etched his name even deeper into cricketing folklore. During the pulsating fifth test against India, Anderson became first ever fast bowler in history to claim 700 test wickets. This monumental achievement arrived on day three at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, where England are trailing in the series 3-1.

The 41-year-old joined the legendary spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) and Shane Warne (Australia) as the only bowlers to have ever reached the 700-wicket mark in test cricket.

Anderson’s achievement is particularly remarkable considering the challenges faced by fast bowlers, who typically see their effectiveness decline with age. However, Anderson, with his exceptional swing bowling and unwavering control, has defied the odds and continues to be a force to be reckoned with.

Anderson, needed just two wickets at the start of the day two. He dismissed the well-set Shubman Gill, who smashed his fourth test ton in the afternoon session, which was his 699th wicket. At the start of day three play he dismissed left-handed batter Kuldeep Yadav, which was his 700th test wicket.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to James Anderson’s achieving this historic feat:

The legendary pacer is now just nine wickets away from going past Australia’s great leg-spinner Shane Warne. The wily leg-spinner snared a total of 708 wickets in his legendary test career before he retired from the sport in January 2007. Anderson made his test debut against Zimbabwe in May 2003 and interestingly the two countries have not played a test match against each other since then.
