Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra put on a brisk century partnership in the IND vs NZ Bengaluru test.

Among one of the most entertaining periods in test cricket is when a tailender is looking to whack the ball for a flurry of boundaries in order to gain some quick runs for his side. You know the fun is going to end soon, so you’d want to enjoy it for as long as it lasts.

Entertainment is what Tim Southee provided to the fans at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Friday and to the viewers when he played a quickfire knock – a significant knock and not just a cameo – on day 3 of the ongoing IND vs NZ test match in Bengaluru.

In partnership with Rachin Ravindra, Southee helped New Zealand’s lead swell over 300 runs. And he did it in a daunting fashion, making the dominating Indian bowling attack look ordinary and the Indian captain clueless.

By lunch on day 3, Southee hammered 49 unbeaten runs off only 50 balls with the help of three fours and three sixes. These three sixes helped him climb the ladder of the most sixes in test cricket further and even go past greats like Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag.

Yes, with 92 sixes at the time of writing, Tim Southee has the sixth-most sixes in test cricket!

Most sixes in test cricket:

  1. Ben Stokes – 131
  2. Brendon McCullum – 107
  3. Adam Gilchrist – 100
  4. Chris Gayle – 98
  5. Jacques Kallis – 97
  6. Tim Southee – 92*
  7. Virender Sehwag – 91
  8. Brian Lara – 88

While he averages only 15 as a batsman, Southee has the proclivity to attack the bowlers instead of trying to hang around. He is tall and strong, meaning that with his long reach, he can wallop sixes on any ground in the world.

Meanwhile, with this century partnership between Southee and Rachin, New Zealand have gained a strong hold on the Bengaluru test.
