IPL 2025 mega auction: Sunrisers Hyderabad acquire Harshal Patel as PBKS pull out of RTM card

Harshal Patel won the Purple Cap last season with 24 wickets for Punjab Kings.
Harshal Patel is regarded as one of the finest T20 pacers in India. Though he failed to cement a place in the Indian T20I side for a long period, Patel was part of the squad at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and has 25 T20I caps under his belt.
Patel is known for his deceiving slower deliveries, cutters, and clever change of pace. He is one of the most effective exponent of the slower-ball variations, using which he’s bagged the Purple Cap twice in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
However, Patel couldn’t carry his IPL success and consistency to international cricket, as he managed 29 wickets in 25 T20Is and conceded runs at an economy of 9.18. He made his T20I debut in 2021 and his last outing in national colors was in 2023.
Harshal Patel sold to SRH for INR 8 crore
SRH signed Harshal Patel for INR 8 crore in the mega auction. PBKS used their RTM card on the pacer initially but then pulled out.
SRH had first got Harshal for INR 6.75 crore. PBKS then exercised their RTM card, following which SRH raised the bid to 8 crore. However, PBKS didn’t match the new price and hence Harshal went to SRH.
Harshal Patel previously in the IPL
Harshal has been in the IPL for over a dozen years. He started his career at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2012 and was with the franchise until 2017 but couldn’t do a great deal then.
Then, he had three forgettable seasons at Delhi Capitals before RCB got him back in IPL 2021, where he had one of the best seasons a bowler has had in the IPL. Patel bagged 32 wickets in IPL 2021, equaling Dwayne Bravo’s record for the most wickets in a season.
RCB bought him back for INR 10.75 crore in the IPL 2022 mega auction and continued to do well: 19 wickets in IPL 2022, 14 wickets in IPL 2023. RCB released him in the IPL 2024 auction pool where Punjab Kings purchased him for INR 11.75 crores.
This year, Patel bagged his second Purple Cap, taking 24 wickets in the season. Yet, PBKS released him ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Overall, Harshal Patel has taken 135 wickets in 106 IPL matches in his career.
