Brendon McCullum will takeover England’s white-ball coaching duties as well from January 2025.

England’s newly appointed white-ball coach Brendon McCullum lavished praise on white-ball captain Jos Buttler, calling him one of the greatest white-ball cricketers the Three Lions ever had.

Wicket-keeper batter Buttler has been ruled out from the upcoming home T20I series against Australia due to calf injury, which he suffered during the preparation for the Men’s Hundred tournament in July. The white-ball captain is also doubtful for the ODI series against the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 champions.

The 34-year-old Buttler played a huge role in helping England to lift two ICC white-ball titles (ODI World Cup 2019 and ICC T20 World Cup 2022).

Buttler scored 312 runs in 11 outings, including one century in the ODI World Cup 2019 for England. In T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the 34-year-old was the fourth-highest run-getter with 225 runs in six outings at a good average of 45.

Buttler goes down as arguably the greatest white-ball player England has ever had: Brendon McCullum

England head coach Brendon McCullum hailed wicket-keeper batter Jos Buttler for having an unbelievable career. McCullum added that the 34-year-old has nothing to prove, and if he retires at this point of time, he would go down as the greatest white-ball cricketer England ever had.

“I think Jos has had an unbelievable career. If he were to retire tomorrow, he goes down as arguably the greatest white-ball player England has ever had. He has nothing left to prove. I want him to get into a space in the next few years where he isn’t trying to protect anything. He just goes out there and absolutely loves playing for England, loves leading the white-ball side and is able to get the most out of the talent around him,” McCullum was quoted by Sky Sports as saying.

The priority will be the ICC Champions Trophy 2025: McCullum

England’s newly appointed head coach McCullum added that their priority will be the Champions Trophy 2025, and the management will try to push Buttler forward to make sure he is injury-free and ready before the tournament.

“That is my responsibility to keep pushing him towards that and keep reaffirming that message to him. Hopefully, he will be back from his injuries soon. The priority will be the Champions Trophy, so we are going to make sure he is ready for that,” McCullum added.

“It gives us some time to spark those conversations and formulate those structures and plans to marry up our beliefs and the language we are going to use with the team to get the most out of what sits in that dressing room,” McCullum said.
