Four bowlers took more than 60 wickets in international cricket in 2024.

ODI cricket took a backseat in 2024 with teams prioritizing the shortest format in the first half of the year for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the second half being dominated by the longest format of the game.

India clinched the prestigious men’s T20 World Cup in June, while South Africa became the first team to seal their spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final.

The year witnessed several historic moments, including India facing first-ever home test series whitewash and Afghanistan achieving a victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup and reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

Let’s see the highest wicket-takers in international cricket in 2024, by each format and collectively.

Test cricket

Jasprit Bumrah had a phenomenal year in test cricket, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in 2024 with 71 scalps at an average of just 14.92, including five five-wicket hauls. Following him was Gus Atkinson, who impressed with 52 wickets at an average of 22.15.

Atkinson’s teammate, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir takes the third spot with 49 wickets at an average of 40.16. Matt Henry, Ravindra Jadeja and Prabath Jayasuriya complete the list, all three with 48 wickets, averaging 18, 24 and 32 respectively.

  2. Gus Atkinson – 52 wickets
  3. Shoaib Bashir – 49 wickets
  4. Matt Henry – 48 wickets
  5. Ravindra Jadeja – 48 wickets

ODI cricket (Only Full Members)

Sri Lanka’s spin magician Wanindu Hasaranga was the highest wicket-taker in ODIs in 2024 with 26 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 15.61. He is closely followed by Afghanistan’s Allah Ghazanfar, who had a breakout year, taking 21 wickets at 13.57, including two five-wicket hauls.

Ghazanfar’s teammate, pacer Azmatullah Omarzai takes the third spot with 17 wickets at an average of 20.47. West Indies duo of Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie complete the list, both with 15 wickets.

Most wickets in ODI cricket in 2024 (Full Members):

  1. Wanindu Hasaranga – 26 wickets
  2. Allah Ghazanfar – 21 wickets
  3. Azmatullah Omarzai – 17 wickets
  4. Alzarri Joseph – 15 wickets
  5. Gudakesh Motie – 15 wickets

T20I cricket (Only Full Members)

Among bowlers from full-member nations, Wanindu Hasaranga finished as the highest wicket-taker in T20Is in 2024 with 38 wickets. He is followed closely by India’s Arshdeep Singh and Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi, who both took 36 wickets each.

Leg spinners Rishad Hossain (Bangladesh) and Adam Zampa (Australia) round off the list, each taking 35 wickets.

  1. Wanindu Hasaranga – 38 wickets
  2. Arshdeep Singh – 36 wickets
  3. Shaheen Afridi – 36 wickets
  4. Rishad Hossain – 35 wickets

Most wickets in international cricket in all three formats in 2024:

Jasprit Bumrah ended up with the most wickets in international cricket across formats in 2024, with 86 wickets. Behind Bumrah on this list is Wanindu Hasaranga with 64 wickets, followed by Alzarri Joseph with 63 scalps.

Bangladesh’s Taskin Ahmed was the fourth-highest wicket-taker in international cricket in 2024 with 63 wickets (behind Alzarri on average) with Matt Henry taking the fifth spot with 59 wickets.
