Will Travis Head replace David Warner as Australia test opener? The former answers
Travis Head played major role in winning two ICC titles for Australia this year.
Veteran Australian opener David Warner will be playing his final test series for Australia. Warner will be officially announcing his retirement after the three-match test series against Pakistan and Australia will begin their hunt for the next opener. David Warner has been a mainstay for Australia in the top-order batting and has played 109 test matches for his side. Australian team management will be considering a few names to replace David Warner in the opening slot.
Australia’s new age hero Travis Head is one of the top contenders to replace David Warner as Australian test opener. But Head has ruled himself out of the race as he thinks that opening the batting in test cricket is a ‘specialist job’. Head is Australia’s designated opening batter in the ODI format along with David Warner in a recent move, he was given the opportunity as an opener in the T20I format in the recently concluded five-match series against India.
Australian head coach Andrew McDonald also feels that replacing Warner will be a huge task for Australia in the future. McDonald was weighing in on Travis Head as the opener to replace David Warner in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India earlier this year. Head has played 3 test matches as an opener and scored 223 runs in 5 innings at an average of 55.75. But Head seems comfortable playing in the middle-order for Australian side.
Travis Head comfortable as middle-order batter
Talking about his possibilities as an opener Travis Head said, “Selectors are happy with me in the middle order. I think it’s a specialist job. The guys who have been waiting to get into the team for a while deserve the first crack at it. But the conversations are ongoing with everyone…only one for me is (opening the batting) the subcontinent. I don’t see myself moving around too much in the future.” Head has had a successful year in 2023 with his national side.
Travis Head played a magnificent role for Australia in the ODI and T20I format as an opener and he stayed till the end of Indian tour. Head played in the T20I series in India after CWC 2023. He said that he wanted to lock himself in the T20I side as well aiming at T20 World Cup 2024 coming next year. David Warner will be playing his final test match for Australia at his home in Sydney starting on 3rd January.
