Virat Kohli last played a T20I for India back in ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

In what may come as shocking news for Indian team fans, reports have stated that the BCCI and selection committee no longer see Virat Kohli in their plans for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Instead, they are focusing on giving the young Ishan Kishan a longer rope at No. 3 spot going forward.

Since losing by ten wickets to England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final, India’s T20I setup has undergone significant adjustments. Since then, neither Rohit Sharma nor Virat Kohli have worn the blue shirt in the shortest format, as the management has delegated opportunity to a group of young players.

Players like Shivam Mavi, Rahul Tripathi, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma & Rinku Singh have gotten opportunities to shine for India and most of them have grabbed the chances they have gotten. India are now spoilt for choices in the T20I format, especially with the T20 World Cup 2024 on the horizon.

Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah finalized for T20 WC 2024, Ishan Kishan likely to pip Virat Kohli- Report

Before the T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean next year, India will play six Twenty20 Internationals, three against South Africa and three against Afghanistan. The trio of Rohit, Kohli, and Bumrah have opted out of the Rainbow Nation’s white ball series, leaving the selectors with only three games to assess the strength and finalize the 15-man roster.

Rohit and Bumrah are automatic options for the upcoming showpiece tournament in the West Indies and USA, according to Dainik Jagran, although Kohli’s participation is not guaranteed. It has also been revealed that BCCI officials and selectors have informed captain Rohit Sharma that he will captain the side in the T20 World Cup 2024.

The report further stated that the selectors and the board want a player who can play attacking cricket from the word go. As of now, Ishan Kishan appears to be the frontrunner to grab the No.3 spot.

If Kishan gets the No. 3 spot, the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja are likely to fill the remaining places in batting order. A BCCI official told Jagran that the senior members of the board will have a discussion with Kohli soon regarding his plans for the T20Is.
