Has Wanindu Hasaranga skipped IPL 2024 because of low pay? SRH all-rounder's manager reveals

SRH bought Wanindu Hasaranga for INR 1.5 crores, his base price at the IPL 2024 auction.

Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is yet to report to his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, which commenced on March 22nd. Hasaranga was bought by Sunrisers surprisingly for his base price of Rs 1.5 crores at the IPL 2024 auction.

Before this, he played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who had purchased him for INR 10.75 crore in 2022. There are quite a few instances of foreign players pulling out of the IPL after going cheaply in the auction.

From the perspective of SRH, it is a lengthy and uncertain wait. With no guarantee of when he will arrive, the franchise is unable to find a suitable alternative. The franchise officials refused to comment on the situation.

“If money was a factor..”- Wanindu Hasaranga’s manager on delay of star joining SRH for IPL 2024

The Wanindu Hasaranga situation is becoming more intriguing. The Sri Lanka spinner, who could avoid sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the T20 World Cup after being selected in the test team, has failed to join his IPL side, despite the tournament having begun a week ago.

“He will join sooner than later. All I can say is he will definitely join the team,” his manager told Cricbuzz.

Hasaranga is expected to go overseas, most likely to Dubai, on March 31 for a checkup on his problematic left ankle. Many feel that Hasaranga is avoiding linking up with his franchise due to the low price he got at the IPL 2024 auction.

Hasaranga’s manager has insisted that such a perception is wrong.

“If money was a factor, we could have enrolled for an INR 2 crore base price. Besides, fewer games mean less money. He has to take care of his ankle. He is also the captain of the national team,” the manager explained.

From an SRH point of view, it is a long and uncertain wait. With no guarantee over the time of his arrival, the franchise is unable to seek a replacement. The franchise officials refused to comment on the matter.
