Pat Cummins was bought by SRH for 20.50 crores in the IPL 2024 auction.

In a blockbuster move at IPL 2024 auction, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured the services of Australia’s World Cup-winning captain, Pat Cummins, for a whopping amount of INR 20.50 crores. He is the second highest most expensive player in history of IPL. The high-stakes bidding war saw Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings initially being interested for the Aussie skipper, but Hyderabad emerged victorious in their pursuit of the dynamic fast bowler.

Pat Cummins, fresh off leading Australia to a 50-overs World Cup triumph in India, became the center of attention with a base price of INR 2 crores. Royal Challengers Bangalore chased him tenaciously, but SRH clinched the deal, setting a new record for the highest bid in IPL auction.

Can Pat Cummins be SRH’s future skipper?

Cummins’ acquisition not only bolstered SRH’s bowling department but also presented a potential leadership option. SRH head coach Daniel Vettori, thrilled with the addition, hinted at the prospect of Cummins taking on a leadership role. Vettori remarked, “I think it’s obviously a discussion (on Cummins being a leader at SRH). There is lot of cricket to be played between now and the IPL 2024 and Cummins has been so successful for Australia. World Cup winner, he pretty much wins everything he touches. So it will surely be a conversation to have.” 

SRH, recognizing the need for leadership qualities in the bowling department, had Cummins on their radar. Aiden Markram currently holds the captaincy, but Cummins’ stellar track record as a leader, having guided Australia to victories in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup, adds weight to the discussion.
