WPL 2024 auction: Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland sold to Delhi Capitals for 2 crore
Annabel Sutherland represented Gujarat Giants in the inaugural edition of WPL.
After missing out on the inaugural WPL title to Mumbai Indians, runners-up Delhi Capitals have defeated MI in a bidding war for star Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland. Delhi Capitals led by Sourav Ganguly in the auction table decided aggressively for the 22-year-old all-rounder and got her in their camp for INR 2 crores. Annabel Sutherland had a base price of 30 lakh rupees for the WPL 2024 auction.
Annabel Sutherland represented Gujarat Giants in the previous season but she was released from the squad ahead of the auction. There were also talks of her being open for a trade. Annabel Sutherland will be strengthening the lower order of Delhi Capitals and also providing them an extra option of a medium pace bowler. Sutherland recently had a wonderful season in the Women’s Big Bash League along with Melbourne Stars.
Massive jump in Sutherland’s salary
Annabel Sutherland played 4 WPL games in her career with Gujarat Giants and scored 28 runs. She took only 3 wickets for her old franchise. Gujarat made several changes in their camp as they wanted to build from scratch. Delhi Capitals had 2.25 crore rupees in their purse and they spent 2 crore on just one player. Delhi needed to fill just 3 slots and they feel comfortable in spending a huge amount on lower order who provide both options.
Pace bowling all-rounder Annabel Sutherland earned INR 70 lakhs in the previous auction and now she has got a big boost in her salary as it is almost triple the amount she was getting from Gujarat Giants. Annabel Sutherland is daughter of James Sutherland who served as Cricket Australia’s chairman for a long tenure. While her brother and former Under-19 skipper Will Sutherland is also in the line to represent the Australian men’s side soon.
Annabel Sutherland has impressive stats to back the amount she will be getting from Delhi Capitals for the upcoming WPL season two. Sutherland has played 3 Tests, 23 ODIs, and 22 T20I games for Australia since her debut in February 2020 at the age of just 18 years. Sutherland has picked up 10 wickets in the shortest format and scored 97 runs in 10 innings. She will have a huge responsibility on her shoulders.
