Top five managers who have been sacked most times
Nobody appoints a new tactician with the plan to eventually sack them but, as we know, it nearly always ends that way.
Many big managers have been unable to meet with standards and expectations of the club. This results in them getting sacked. Modern football has seen more and more fans become demanding and impatient. One of the most recent examples includes how Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel and hired Graham Potter, only to sack Potter after some games. Another example includes how Bayern Munich replaced Nagelsmann with Thomas Tuchel.
This has led to an environment where managers have to deliver results quickly and consistently. Some managers have failed to do this and have been sacked numerous times. Let’s take a look at the top five managers who have been sacked the most times.
5. Jose Mourinho – 5 times
“The Special One” is one of the greatest managers of our generation. Mourinho was never a great player but he had the brains for the managerial job. Jose Mourinho has numerous accolades to his name. One of the most remarkable ones is winning the UCL with Porto and Inter Milan.
However, not even Jose Mourinho is perfect. Jose Mourinho has been sacked 4 times throughout his managerial career. Mourinho was sacked at Chelsea twice once at Tottenham Hotspurs and once at Manchester United. The Manchester United job took quite a toll on both the team and Mourinho. This was because his old methods were deemed no longer efficient and the media called it drab and boring. Jose was most recently sacked by Serier A club AS Roma in January 2024.
4. Sam Allardyce – 5 times
Allardyce is one of the oldest and most experienced managers in football. He has over 30 years of experience and has managed numerous top English clubs. Some of these include Bolton Wanderers, West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Everton. Sam Allardyce’s first sack came when he was a player-manager at West Bromwich Albion. Sam Allardyce has been fired 5 times in his managerial career. The longest he has ever managed a club was Blackburn Rovers and that too for 7 years.
Sam even managed the England national side for a short while. Unfortunately, he was sacked after some months following allegations of malpractice.

3. Roy Hodgson – 5 times
Just like Sam Allardyce, Roy Hodgson also has a vast experience over the years to back his reputation. Roy has managed more than 20 teams in the past 44 years. It is no surprise that Roy has managed some high-profile teams. These include Inter-Milan, Liverpool and Udinese. Roy has managed four international sides which include England, Switzerland, Finland, and UAE. Roy Hodgson just like Sam Allardyce managed Blackburn Rovers. He also managed the England National Team and got the sack.
2. Carlo Ancelotti – 5 times
Ancelotti is a legend of the game both as a player and a manager. Carlo Ancelotti’s first sacking came when he was managing Juventus. He then managed AC Milan for 8 years and went to Chelsea where they sacked him after just two seasons. Much of Carlo’s reputed legacy as a manager came under Real Madrid. Despite winning the Copa Del Rey and UEFA Champions League with Madrid in the 2014-15 season, Perez took the hard decision and sacked him.
After this Carlo joined Bayern Munich and was sacked in the 2017-18 season. Overall Carlo was sacked 5 times throughout his career. It all worked out well in the end as Carlo joined Real Madrid again and won the UEFA Champions League with the Madridistas.
1. Claudio Raneiri – 8 times
The infamous Claudio Raneiri is perhaps the only manager on this list to have managed so many big clubs but not win much silverware. The only top-flight title Claudio has won as manager is the Premier League title with Leicester City. Unfortunately, the Foxes fired him after he failed to perform consistently. He has been sacked 7 times which is the most any manager has ever been fired.
Claudio Raneiri has managed the likes of Chelsea, Inter Milan, Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Leicester City, AS Roma. One of his worst managerial runs was at Chelsea when he failed to win a trophy for four seasons. Raneiri was also fired from the Greece National team before joining Leicester City and winning the Premier League with them.
