Kobbie Mainoo is nearing his first appearance in the 2023-24 season

Erik ten Hag is thinking about handing Kobbie Mainoo his first start as a Manchester United player in the Premier League against Everton. The 18-year-old has already made his debut in the 2022-23 season for the Red Devils.

Kobbie Mainoo is yet to make an appearance for Manchester United this season.

Kobbie Mainoo enjoyed a sublime pre-season that left the United fans and Erik ten Hag raving about him. Unfortunately, he picked up an ankle injury against Real Madrid that made him unavailable.

Mainoo made three appearances for England’s Under-19s during the international break, which suggests that the midfielder is now fully fit. The Red Devils have a crucial schedule ahead of them.

The Red Devils are without the likes of Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. The trio is sidelined and this gives an opportunity to this talented midfielder.

They have three consecutive away games in the next seven days – Everton, Galatasaray, and Newcastle United. The trip to Galatasaray is a must-win for Man United if they want to stay in the UEFA Champions League.

They cannot afford to drop points to the Magpies as they are a direct competitor for the Premier League top four spots.

Facing 19th-placed Everton won’t be a cakewalk as they would be motivated to fight back after their 10-point punishment for breaching financial regulations.

Man United confirmed on November 21 that Shaw had returned to training and could make just his third league appearance of the season if he can pass fit for the Everton match. Malacia is also hoping to return soon but is not yet available.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Everton, Ten Hag updated the media on Shaw’s return.

“Luke Shaw will be available for Sunday, he will be in the squad. To Jonny: he’s on the way back, he’s not ready for Everton, he will not take long,” he said.
