Newcastle United lost 4-2 on penalties

After losing to Chelsea in a penalty shootout in the EFL Cup quarterfinal on Tuesday night, Newcastle United has two new physical worries.

Sven Botman, a defender, made his starting lineup comeback for the first time in nearly three months during the game. However, the 23-year-old and Emil Krafth were taken off the pitch at halftime.

During halftime, United manager Eddie Howe introduced Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier in place of the two. He gave Newcastle injury update after their match with Chelsea.

“Botman was a planned substitution after 45 minutes, a nice step for him. I thought he did very well. Krafth and Gordon got knocks.

“Emil was too sore to continue. He’s got a nasty gash on his shin, which is quite sore at the moment. Anthony is the same.

“I thought it was a really poor tackle on him (from Caicedo). It was the type of tackle you don’t want to see, taking one of our attacking players out of the game. He’s very sore at the minute.

“Should it have been a red card? It’s too difficult to say live and I haven’t seen it again, but I’m taking opinion from other people and they say they thought it was.”

Levi Colwill put a challenge in on Krafth in the first half, and Moises Caicedo’s cynical challenge also happened to knock Anthony Gordon down. Howe took issue with the Chelsea midfielder’s challenge as he drove his studs into the Newcastle winger’s calf.

Newcastle’s next match is a Premier League visit to Kenilworth Road, where they will take on Luton Town on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Magpies are hoping to win just their second away league game of the year. Gordon was supplanted by Matt Ritchie when he was substituted early in the second half.

“Anthony is the same [as Krafth],” Howe added. “I thought it was a really poor tackle on him. It’s the type of tackle you don’t want to see, taking our attacking players out of the game so he’s very sore at the minute.”
