Odisha FC women’s team players shared about how menstrual cycle significantly impacts players.

What is menstrual cycle? Are you aware of sanitary pads? How many people in the society are aware of the fact that a period is a natural and healthy aspect of women’s reproductive health?

Although it’s 2024 and education is given top priority for the development of society and nations, discussing menstruation is still considered as a taboo in most parts of the world. Despite this, a few brave people are vocal about it and do not shy away from expressing their views on this important topic.

There are certain passionate and dedicated individuals and organizations who take the lead in educating women in their community, raising awareness about the menstrual cycle and advocating proper care and support.

Odisha FC, a football club based in Bhubaneswar, has taken a significant step by initiating the distribution of sanitary pads to underprivileged girls in schools, colleges and slum areas under their “SheDays” program.

What is SheDays and how does it work?

“SheDays” is an inspiring initiative launched by Odisha FC, demonstrating their commitment to supporting women’s hygiene and empowerment. For every goal scored by their team in the ongoing Indian Women’s League (IWL), they have pledged to distribute 50 pads, making a tangible difference in the lives of women.

The women football players of the club stand as passionate ambassadors for this initiative. Their dedication goes beyond promoting a social cause, it aims to eliminate the use of regular clothes during periods, a practice that can lead to serious health issues like cancer.

As the program is centered on the health and hygiene of women, and the women’s team of Odisha FC serves as the embodiment of this important cause, we had the opportunity to engage in a heartfelt conversation with Astam Oraon and Arifa Zaheer, both integral players of Odisha FC. Our discussion delved into the impact of the menstrual cycle on a woman player.

Additionally, Odisha FC’s Head of Women’s Teams and Grassroots passionately expounded upon the initiative and shared insights into their future plans for this noble cause in an exclusive interaction with Khel Now.

How important is education on the menstrual cycle?

Education on the menstrual cycle must be a top priority to ensure that girls from all communities are well-informed about this important aspect of their health. It is crucial that this initiative reaches every girl, not just athletes, so that they can all be empowered with the knowledge they need.

“Education on the menstrual cycle is very crucial for everyone, not only for athletes. It will help the girls to learn more about hygiene, prevent infections related to it and better their well being,” said Arifa, who plays as a defender in Odisha FC women’s team.

How far does periods affect a woman player?

It’s absolutely clear that the menstrual cycle significantly impacts female players, affecting their performance during matches. Another factor that can influence their game is their ability to handle these challenges. To gain insight into the issues these players face, we engaged in a meaningful discussion with them.

“Periods affect the woman’s body both physically and mentally. Hormonal fluctuations  can influence athletic performance. For some, this may lead to reduced training participation, potentially compromising skill development, fitness levels, and even their chances of being selected for competition,” said Arifa, who was quite vocal about the issue.

Astam Oraon, who also plays as a defender in the Odisha FC team, fearlessly voiced the challenges experienced by players, “We feel pain in stomach and back during our periods. It does affect our game and it becomes difficult for us to play at that time.”

How did you come to know about sanitary pads?

There are still individuals in certain parts of society who remain uninformed about the significance of sanitary pads. However, various organizations are actively undertaking efforts to educate and inspire them to embrace the benefits of this essential product.

“I came to know about it from my older sister and my mother,” said Arifa, which states that her family is well aware of the use of sanitary pads.

“I got to know about sanitary pads while staying in the hostel. My seniors taught me the use of it when I had my first period,” a statement by Astam, which asserts that the individuals in your immediate environment serve as the most influential educators.

Are the people in your surroundings, basically the people in your villages aware of sanitary pads?

It is an essential responsibility for individuals who are knowledgeable about the use of sanitary pads to ensure that people in their surroundings are aware of their use and availability, regardless of whether they are already informed about it.

“Yes they are aware of the use of it”, both the players had the same reply to it.

Have you ever had a discussion about this with your siblings or friends?

Knowledge flourishes through sharing. This rings true in every aspect of life, if we possess vital knowledge, it is our duty to impart it to others, starting with our own family.

“I have discussions about it, not just with my siblings but also my friends,” stated Arifa.

“My elder siblings are the ones who gave me further knowledge about periods. Even though I also do the same, I share my learnings with my younger ones,” added Astam.

Can we expect more initiatives by Odisha FC in the coming days?

Starting a program focused on social causes may be straightforward, but maintaining it and strategizing for its future development can be challenging. Despite this, Odisha FC remains resolute in their commitment to promoting their cause and undertaking all essential measures to raise awareness about sanitary pads.

“We will be looking at innovative ways to expand on this. We are keen to build on this momentum and use our athletes and our social media platforms to create unique messaging methodologies to appeal to young girls,” added Hilda Gurung.
