Newcastle secure FA Cup round of 16 berth with win over Tyneside rivals Sunderland

Newcastle United gave a dominant performance against their rivals
Sunderland hosted their biggest rivals Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light for FA Cup 2023-24 Round of 32 fixture.
The Magpies are currently playing in the Premier League and made a return to the UEFA Champions League this season. The Black Cats are playing in the EFL Championship and playing for promotion to the top division.
Kieran Trippier was back in the side after missing the tie against Liverpool. Eddie Howe played with a really strong team and wanted to win the tie at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland made a positive start to the match and were going toe-to-toe with Eddie Howe’s men. Newcastle United were finding it difficult to break Sunderland’s defence.
The visitors were gifted the first goal after defender Daniel Ballard converted Joelinton’s goal into his own net. This gave them the momentum going into the second half.
Alexander Isak took no time in the second half and extended his team’s lead. Miguel Almiron provided the assist for the goal.

There was a moment in the match when things got heated. Anthony Gordon and Hume were involved in a tangle. Gordon was booked and Hume escaped a booking as he had already received one.
Towards the end of the match, Newcastle United were awarded a penalty after Anthony Gordon was tackled inside the penalty box. Alexander Isak stepped up to take the penalty and converted from the spot.
Newcastle United have qualified for the last 16 and are aiming for their seventh FA Cup crown. They last won this competition way back in the 1954-55 season. The last time the Magpies got an entry in the final two was back in the 1998-99 season.
Eddie Howe will be happy with the performance of his players and will wait for their next-round opponents. The next round will take plays at the end of the month.
