The new midfield additions will surely make the MLS 2024 worthwhile

The Major League Soccer 2024 season is already underway. Major things have taken place in the 2023 edition. For starters now there is a MLS Season Pass on Apple TV to watch any game anywhere. The biggest move was the addition of Lionel Messi to the league.

Although Messi’s presence halfway into last year’s MLS didn’t result in lifting the title for Inter Miami, the league surely is getting a lot of eyeballs. With further attention to the soccer in United States, many new players have joined. This will add further competitiveness to the division.

The MLS 2024 season will have a worthwhile talent base in the midfield area. Many clubs boast extremely crafty midfielders be they defensive-minded or attacking. The following ten are notable midfield maestros to be kept on the viewer’s watchlist.

10. Sergio Busquets (Inter Miami)

A deep-lying midfielder like Sergio Busquets is one of the most beautiful players to watch. The three-time UEFA Champions League winner with FC Barcelona made a switch to the States mid-season last year. The classy midfielder may have turned 35 but still has a lot to offer to the Herons.

9. Aidan Morris (Columbus Crew)

Aidan Morris deservingly won the MLS Cup last year with Columbus Crew. The box-to-box midfielder makes his presence felt in almost every game. More so alongside Darlington Nagbe, Crew boasts an exciting midfield combo of Morris and Nagbe.

8. Xherdan Shaqiri (Chicago Fire FC)

At 32 years of age, Xherdan Shaqiri plays for the Eastern Conference team Chicago Fire FC. With number 10 on his back, Shaqiri plays as a centre-attacking midfielder currently under head coach Frank Klopas. Last season in MLS, the former Bayern Munich player was involved in 9 goals.

7. Eduard Lowen (St. Louis City SC)

The Western Conference saw a new team getting added last season. St. Louis City SC stunningly topped the Western table in its debut in the competition. 27-year-old German midfielder Eduard Löwen played a notable part in that success. Lowen already has an assist after an opening fixture in the 2024 MLS against Real Salt Lake.

6. Riqui Puig (LA Galaxy)

A bright talent that once harboured in the ranks of FC Barcelona calls Los Angeles his home. The former La Masia graduate has been playing in the United States since August 2022, but last season he seemed settled. After seven goals and four assists in 2023, Riqui Puig has also moved on to a new number. Puig will now wear number 10 on his back.

5. Carles Gil (New England Revolution)

One interesting midfielder from the New England Revolution side. Carles Gil captains his side in MLS and has been a part of the team since 2019. The 31-year-old attacking midfielder is left-footed and a surprise for the opposing sides. The former Aston Villa and Valencia man was involved in 19 goals for the Revs in the 2023 regular MLS season.

4. Emil Forsberg (New York Red Bulls)

One of the big moves for the 2024 Major League Soccer season. After a successful stint in the Bundesliga, Emil Forsberg comes in with huge admiration. Given the qualities of the former RB Leipzig player, Forsberg is directly handed the captain’s armband in his new team for a reason.

3. Hector Herrera (Houston Dynamo)

Just like Forsberg, Hector Herrera is another midfielder, another captain but of another team. Houston Dynamo have been using the services of Herrera since a permanent move in July 2022. The former Atlético de Madrid and FC Porto player distributed 17 assists single-handedly last term.

2. Thiago Almada (Atlanta United)

Hector Herrera may have assisted 17 times last season but still, he fell short to one particular player. That player is none other than Thiago Almada. Almada grossed 19 assists alone in 2023. The 21-year-old still has many more years in his career than many others on the list.

1. Luciano Acosta (FC Cincinnati)

The 2023 Major League Soccer MVP winner had a brilliant season. FC Cincinnati’s Lucho Acosta tallied a total of 31 goal contributions. And no other player had a better overall record than him in this regard. Captain Acosta was a key ingredient in leading to the Supporters’ Shield title for the Orange and Blue.
