The French midfielder was a bright spark during his debut season for the Highlanders.

Indian Super League (ISL) side NorthEast United FC have retained the services of French attacking midfielder Romain Philippoteaux ahead of the 2023-24 ISL season, the club announced on Thursday.

The Frenchman was brought into the Highlanders set up last season straight from French top division side Brest. The midfielder was one of the few silver linings in a disappointing season for the Highlanders in 2022-23.

Romain is the only foreign player retained by NorthEast United after the club bid farewell to 13 first team players, including five foreigners. As mentioned earlier that the midfielder was one of the best players for the Highlanders last season, Romain wrapped up the season with four goal contributions.

Romain Philippoteaux’s strengths

He scored twice, including a spectacular free kick against Bengaluru FC in Guwahati, and also provided two assists for the Highlanders. Romain’s more than just an attacking midfielder. He’s very versatile and that’s what sets him apart from other players.

He can operate as a right midfielder, right winger, central attacking midfielder and even a left winger as and when required. Philippoteaux is a type of player who can adapt to any style of play because he was very effective under three coaches at NorthEast United FC last season.

He not only contributes well in attack, but also comes back and helps out his teammates at the back. The 35-year-old is a keen dribbler and an excellent passer of the ball. He maintained a passing accuracy of close to 80% all throughout last season in India’s top flight.

NorthEast United’s preparation ahead of 2023-24 season

The Highlanders have appointed Mandar Tamhane as their new CEO. Mandar has started his work in full swing and has handed the hot seat to Spanish head coach Juan Pedro Benali. Naushad Moosa has also joined the Highlanders, as the Indian assistant coach and the head of youth development.

NorthEast United have already roped in Dinesh Singh and the returning Redeem Tlang on a free transfer, as reported earlier by Khel Now, and are expected to make a few more interesting moves. Moreover, Romain’s retention gives NorthEast United a big boost in the midfield position.
