Paris Saint-Germain have dominated the league in recent years.

Ligue 1 is one of the best football competitions in the world. The French league boasts some of the best players in the world. This makes the league more competitive. But, PSG have dominated the competition in recent seasons. However, the Parisians do not have the most Ligue 1 titles. The team from Paris have won seven of the last 10 editions of the league. This included a four-peat from 2012 to 2016. They look to be course for a 10th league triumph.

But, PSG weren’t always the force in French football that they are now. Olympique Marseille dominated the league in the 1990s. Lyon replicated a similar phase in the 2000s. However, prior to this, AS Saint Etienne were the dominant force in the country in the 1960s and 1980S.

Let’s have a look at the top five teams who have won the most Ligue 1 titles.

5. FC Nantes – 8 Titles

FC Nantes are one of the most historically successful clubs in French football. The Canaries were formed in April 1943. They have won Ligue 1 title eight times and finished as runners-up on seven occasions. Nantes had league successes across several decades.

Nantes won successive Ligue 1 titles in the 1960s. In addition, they won the championship twice in the 1970s and 1980s. However, The Canaries’ final league success came in the 2000-01 season. This was also their last major title win. Nantes have also won three Coupe de France crowns and one Coupe de la Ligue title.

4. AS Monaco – 8 Titles

AS Monaco were formed in November 1924 and have a huge history in French football. The Monaco-based club have been Ligue 1 champions on eight occasions. In addition, the Red and Whites have won five Coupe de France trophies.

The club have also enjoyed success in recent years. They won the league title in 2016-17, ending PSG’s four-year winning streak. This was their first Ligue 1 triumph in 17 years.

AS Monaco also won Ligue 1 titles in the 1960s, 1970, 1980s and 1990s. The French side also finished as runners-up on seven occasions.

3. Paris Saint-Germain – 9 Titles

Paris Saint-Germain have dominated French football in recent years. The Parisians have won a total of nine Ligue 1 titles. They have also finished as runners-up on as many occasions. In addition, PSG have won 14 Coupe de France and nine Coupe de La Ligue titles.

Paris Saint-Germain’s first two Ligue 1 successes came in the 1985-86 and 1993-94 seasons. The Parisians then waited 12 years before winning the league title again. Since, PSG have won seven league titles in 10 years. This includes a four-year winning streak from 2012 to 2016.

2 Olympique de Marseille – 9 Titles

Formed in 1899, Olympique de Marseille are one of the oldest clubs in France. They have a huge history in French football and are one of the most successful teams. Marseille have nine Ligue 1 titles and have come second 12 times. However, their most recent league success came in the 2009-10 season.

The 1970s and 1980s were the most successful decades in the club’s history. Marseille won multiple league and cup titles in that period. The Olympians have also won 10 Coupes de France and three Coupes de la Ligue trophies.

1. AS Saint Etienne – 10 titles

ASSE are the most successful club in French league history. Saint Etienne have won 10 league titles. They have also won six Coupe de France crowns, a Coupe de la Ligue and five Trophee des Champions titles. However, their last league triumph came in the 1980-81 season.

The club achieved most of their success in the 1960s and 1970s. They won a number of domestic honours through that time.
