BVB lost their last UCL final match at Wembley in 2013

The final of the most prestigious club competition in the world, the UEFA Champions League, is here in one day’s time. The kings of Europe, Real Madrid will face off against the high-flying Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium. Borussia Dortmund have had a magical season in the Champions League.

Dortmund came into the competition on the back of last day Bundesliga title loss last season. Not even in their wildest dreams they would have thought that they could come all the way to the final of the Champions League this season.

Moreover, they were placed in the group of death in the group stages. However, what they scripted next is a fairy tale journey that will be remembered for the ages to come. Let us take a look at Borussia Dortmund’s road to the UEFA Champions League 2023-24 final.

Fought their way out of the group of death

Borussia Dortmund could not have had a worst start in their group by getting zero points in the first two group games. They were placed in Group F along with PSG, AC Milan and a resurgent Newcastle United. In the first game, they lost 2-0 against PSG away from home. In the second game, they ended the game 0-0 at home against AC Milan.

They managed to beat Newcastle United 1-0 away from home in the third game. They did a double on Newcastle by winning 2-0 at home in the fourth game. They now won 3-1 against AC Milan away from home in their fifth game. Dortmund rounded off the group stage with a 1-1 draw at home against PSG. Even after a poor start, they finished at number one in the group stages, three points clear of the second placed PSG.

Managed to brush off PSV in the Round of 16

They managed to secure a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands in the opening tie. In the second leg at home, they comfortably brushed off PSV with a 2-0 win. They were the pre-favourites going into the game. Dortmund managed to keep up with the tag as they qualified for the quarter-final.

Historical win against Atletico Madrid in the quarter-final

Atletico Madrid were in a pole position to qualify for the semi-final after they managed to defeat them 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano in the first leg. However, Dortmund came back all guns blazing at home as they defeated Atletico Madrid 4-2 at home in the second leg. They managed to qualify for the semi-final with an aggregate score of 5-4 in their favour.

Managed to outclass a strong PSG team in the semi-final

Dortmund were up for a huge challenge across the two legs against the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele. However, they passed this test even. They managed to win 1-0 away from home in Paris in the first leg with a goal from Niclas Fullkrug.

In the second leg at home, they again managed to win 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Mat Hummels. PSG were also unlucky as plenty of their shots hit the crossbar. However, it was Dortmund’s night as they qualified for the final to face Real Madrid which will also be Marco Reus’ final game for Dortmund.
