The Magpies will hope to win their first game of the new season.

Newcastle are set for the biggest test in their second Premier League game of the season when they host Liverpool. Newcastle United begin their new campaign with a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa.

However, they will be eager to register their first win of the season when they play the Reds, but certainly, the visitors will pose a big challenge on Monday night.

Eddie Howe is set to deploy a strong starting lineup against Liverpool to secure his first win of the season, and ahead of the game, they have been handed a big injury boost as Joe Willock is set for a return from an injury he sustained against a K-League XI in South Korea.

Newcastle injury news & Isak update

Updating on the midfielder’s return, Howe said:

‘Joe trained on Tuesday and Wednesday and trained really well. When he went down in the game [in Korea] I thought he was going to be out longer term, it didn’t look good. Credit to him, he’s got back fit and looking good.’

However, they are set to miss their prolific goalscorer, Alexander Isak, who is now training alone after informing the club of his intention to leave the team in the current summer window.

This resulted in Newcastle deciding to block the move despite the bid from Liverpool. Following this, the Sweden international released a statement on Instagram, which read as:

“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” Isak wrote.

“That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.”

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To act now as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”

“That’s where things are for me right now — and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself,” he concluded.

It will be interesting to see how long the situation will continue, as Howe knows that he will need the centre-forward who possesses great goalscoring instincts in crucial games and at some point, he will have to recall Isak to lead the line.

Howe told reporters on Friday: “[Isak] won’t be part of the squad this weekend. The club has to act in the best interests of Newcastle United. It will do that in every situation It looks like it is coming to an end, or it will come to an end pretty quickly.”
