Messi will hope to defend the title with Argentina

Lionel Messi will now join his national team ahead of Copa America after playing his last game for Inter Miami in a 3-3 draw with St. Louis

The Herons suffered an embarrassing 3-1 midweek loss to Atlanta United followed up by a 3-3 draw to St. Louis City SC at Chase Stadium on Saturday. Since his arrival in July of last year, Messi has been the driving force behind Inter Miami’s comeback. Unfortunately, the seasoned superstar has had trouble staying fit during his tenure in Major League Soccer, which has caused him to miss almost one-third of the Herons’ games.

He won’t play another Miami match until Argentina faces elimination from the tournament. Messi will formally join up with his international colleagues on Monday, June 3. Argentine set to start their tournament against Canada and Messi is set to miss up to six Major League Soccer games.

Which games could Messi miss for Inter Miami?

  • Philadelphia Union (A) – 15 June
  • Columbus Crew (H) – 19 June
  • Nashville SC (A) – 29 June
  • Charlotte FC (A) – 3 July
  • FC Cincinnati (A) – 6 July
  • Toronto FC (H) – 17 July

How will Inter Miami replace Lionel Messi?

Despite all the enthusiasm surrounding Lionel Messi’s spectacular debut season in Major League Soccer, Inter Miami have not yet demonstrated that they are a serious contender without the Argentine star. In the six MLS games that Messi has missed thus far in 2024, Inter Miami have only won two; in the eleven games that he has played, they have won eight.

But in the past week, that pattern has reversed, as Miami lost 3-1 to Atlanta with Messi starting again after an outstanding road victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps without him. Nevertheless, the Herons must discover a substitute for Messi’s inventiveness throughout the course of six games.
