The Azzurri begin their title defence against Albania.

Italy will begin their title defence against Albania in their opening match of UEFA Euro 2024. Under Luciano Spalletti’s philosophy, the Azzurri have developed into a well-drilled side that plays good attacking football while maintaining a strong defence.

Having already achieved great success with the national team, he will be given the task of leading the nation to another victory. There will be plenty of eyes on the team after winning the last edition of the tournament and expectations will be at an all time high.

Having failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Italy will be taking this opportunity to prove that they are still among the best sides in the world. They will be in Group B with Albania, Croatia and Spain.

Italy Predicted Lineup (Formation 4-2-3-1):

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma

Gianluigi Donnarumma has established himself as one of the Italy team’s key players, taking over from legendary Gianluigi Buffon to become the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. Donnarumma has appeared for the national team 61 times since he first made his debut in 2016.

Due to his reflexes and the ability he has to make saves one-on-one, Donnarumma has become a world-class goalkeeper for the team. Furthermore, he can sense danger for the team from set pieces.

RB: Giovani Di Lorenzo

Giovanni Di Lorenzo has been one of Europe’s most complete defenders thanks to his excellent ball-carrying abilities in the final third. He can even defend one-on-one situations. Di Lorenzo has made 47 appearances for Napoli this season with the skipper scoring two goals and assisting another eight.

He is a strong tackler who doesn’t shy away from making challenges. In the past 36 appearances for the Italy national team, he has scored three goals and will aim to play a crucial role going forward.

CB: Gianluca Mancini

As Roma captain, Gianluca Mancini guided the team to a sixth-place finish in the Italian league and to the semifinal round of the UEFA Europa League in the same season. As well as being a major threat from set-pieces, he has scored seven goals in 49 appearances for the team.

Mancini is renowned for tough tackling and leadership in the backline which will be crucial at the Euros. In his 13 appearances with the Azzurri to date, he has not yet opened his goal-scoring account.

CB: Alessandro Bastoni

Alessandro Bastoni has emerged as an exciting centre-back thanks to his ability to join the attack with marauding runs from the back. This season, he has made 37 appearances for Inter scoring one goal and assisting three more.

As a left-footer, Bastoni can provide diagonal passes as well as pinpoint crosses in the box, making him a venomous player. His first appearance for the Italy national team took place in 2020 and he has gone on to make 23 appearances, scoring one goal.

LB: Federico Dimarco

Federico Dimarco had a wonderful season with Inter where he made 40 appearances for the team scoring six goals and assisting another eight. He played a major role in the team’s push for the Serie A title this season which they eventually won by a huge margin.

Dimarco has learned the art of defending with the finest in the business. During his time on loan at Hellas Verona, he grew into an exciting fullback. He is a typical player who is not afraid to bomb forward from the left-hand side of the pitch, to join in attacks. This is evident by his contribution this season.

CM: Nicolo Barella

Nicolo Barella has become a crucial player for the Azzurri due to his tenacious industry in the middle of the park. He wins the ball back through tackles and interceptions as well as joining attacks from deep. He had an incredible season at Inter where he demonstrated his qualities by making the most tackles and recoveries.

In total, he made 48 appearances for them scoring two goals while assisting another four. Having missed the friendlies due to a minor injury, there is a sense of tension in the Italy camp who await his quick recovery.

CM: Bryan Cristante

It was an outstanding season for the Roma man, as he played 52 matches for the team, the most by anyone, scored four goals and assisted five others. He has developed an excellent midfield partnership with Pellegrini and Bove, and has only improved over the course of the year.

His right foot is venomous and he has a habit of scoring stunning goals which is why he is known for his long spectacular goals. Cristante has also improved his defending this season, shielding the back four while also contributing to the attack.

LW: Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa is a technically gifted wideman who mostly plays as an inverted winger. He does not shy away from taking on defenders in one-on-one situations. Chiesa possesses explosive pace and control which helps him get past opponents easily.

In the 2023-24 season, he has made 37 appearances for Juventus scoring 10 goals and assisting another two. He has also made over 47 appearances for the Italy national team after breaking onto the scene in 2017.

Italy predicted lineup for UEFA Euro 2024

AM: Lorenzo Pellegrini

Lorenzo Pellegrini is becoming a vital cog for his national team after impressing in recent outings. He is the link-up player between defence and attack. He had a fantastic campaign with AS Roma where he recorded 41 appearances for the team scoring 10 goals and making eight assists.

Pellegrini is also one of the most experienced players in the team. He made his Italy team debut in 2017 where he learned the art from the best. So far, he has made over 30 appearances scoring six goals.

RW: Giacomo Raspadori

Giacomo Raspadori has impressed Spalletti enough to put him in the starting eleven. This is after enjoying an incredible season with Napoli and his past outings with the national team. This season he has made 47 appearances for the team scoring six goals and assisting another three.

He also has an excellent record with the Italy team. He has scored six goals in 27 appearances after breaking into the Italy side in 2021. Raspadori is an all-round player who is skilled at attacking but equally does his defensive duties by helping the team recover the ball.

ST: Gianluca Scamacca

Gianluca Scamacca had an incredible season with Atalanta with whom he has won the UEFA Europa League. After failing to make a name for himself with West Ham, Scamacca made a brave call to move back to his country and sign for them. He is now reaping rewards after netting 19 goals in his debut campaign while adding seven assists.

Scamacca will aim to improve his goal tally for the national team after netting just one goal in 15 matches. He is an in-form player who will aim to play a crucial role in defending the title with Italy this summer.
