Atalanta will take on German giants Bayer Leverkusen in an exciting final

The UEFA Europa League, the secondary club football competition in Europe, reaches its thrilling climax on Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024. Kick-off is at 21:00 CET (Thursday, 23rd May 2024; 12:30 am IST). Two European giants, Atalanta BC from Italy and Bayer 04 Leverkusen from Germany, will lock horns at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, in a battle for continental glory.

Who are the two finalists in the Europa League final?

Italy’s Atalanta have etched their name in the history books, reaching their first-ever European final! The Serie A underdogs fought their way through the competition, defeating Marseille in a convincing 4-1 aggregate victory in the semi-finals.

Their opponents in the final will be a force to be reckoned with: the undefeated German giants, Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen continued their dominant run this season, edging out Roma with a combined score of 4-2 in the semi-finals.

Where is the Europa League final?

The Dublin Arena, boasting a capacity of over 50,000 passionate fans, will be the stage for this epic encounter. This isn’t the stadium’s first taste of Europa League glory, having hosted the 2011 final between Portuguese sides Porto and Braga. Back then, Radamel Falcao’s solitary goal secured the trophy for Porto. Now, a new chapter unfolds, with Atalanta and Leverkusen aiming to etch their names on the Europa League trophy.

Who is the match official for the Europa League final?

Veteran Romanian referee István Kovács will be in the spotlight for the upcoming Europa League final.  This prestigious match marks Kovács’ second time officiating a major UEFA club competition final.  In 2022, he successfully oversaw the UEFA Europa Conference League clash between Roma and Feyenoord in Tirana, Albania.  His experience and composure will be crucial in ensuring a smooth and fair contest for the Europa League final in Dublin.

What is the award for the winners?

The UEFA Europa League final isn’t just about bragging rights. The victors will hoist a trophy that’s more than just symbolic – it’s a heavyweight champion in itself. Weighing in at a hefty 15kg, the Europa League trophy is the heaviest piece of UEFA silverware. Talk about a trophy with some serious presence!

But the weight doesn’t stop there. Lifting the trophy comes with the added challenge of its unique design – there are no handles! This quirky detail adds another layer of difficulty (and perhaps a photo opportunity) for the jubilant champions.

Beyond the trophy itself, the Europa League final offers a significant reward for the winners. They’ll gain automatic qualification for the following season’s UEFA Champions League group stage. However, if the Europa League winners have already secured Champions League qualification through their domestic league performance, the spot will be awarded to the next highest-ranked team in the Europa League not already qualified for the UCL.
