Young guns and returning faces headline USA’s Copa America squad

Head coach Gregg Berhalter has named a 27-man provisional squad for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) ahead of the highly anticipated Copa America tournament hosted this summer.

The competition, which takes place from June 14th to July 13th, sees the USMNT returning to the prestigious South American tournament for the first time since 2016.

The United States squad features a blend of experience and exciting young talent, with established stars like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams forming the core of the team. Notably absent is right-back Sergino Dest, who is sidelined with an injury.

Young talent is well-represented with the inclusion of Folarin Balogun, the former Arsenal forward who pledged his allegiance to the USA. Coventry City’s Haji Wright, showcasing his prowess in the English Championship, also earns a call-up.

Berhalter sees Wright primarily as a wide option, while Josh Sargent’s return aims to bolster the attacking options. The absence of first-choice right-back Sergino Dest due to injury necessitates Shaq Moore’s inclusion.

However, MLS regulars like Zack Steffen, Jesus Ferreira, and Jordan Morris are surprisingly left out of the United States squad. Berhalter explained this decision by emphasizing the need to assess additional attacking options and potential replacements for the injured Dest.

Berhalter acknowledges the importance of Copa America as a testing ground for the 2026 World Cup. He states, “This summer presents an opportunity for us to progress and grow as a team
We have a talented group of players and are excited about the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the world.”

The United States final 23-man squad will be announced after the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Colombia. With Copa America kicking off in June, fans can expect an exciting display of attacking prowess from the young guns and a strong leadership display from the established veterans.  The United States team will aim to impress on home soil.
