Massive development budget

Gearbox Entertainment’s most ambitious looter shooter game is all set to release on September 12, 2025. For now, the Borderlands 4 price is still a mystery.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced at PAX East 2025 that the game’s production budget is “more than twice” that of Borderlands 3.

Potentially pushing the price to $80, in line with previous industry standards established by Nintendo and Microsoft.

Bigger budget, higher price?

Pitchford expressed optimism about Borderlands 4‘s price, saying, “I don’t know what it will be. That’s the truth.

The game’s production budget, which is more than double Borderlands 3’s rumored $140 million, reflects its ambitious ambition, which includes seamless open-world zones, billions of weapons, and new mobility mechanics unveiled at PlayStation State of Play.

Rising physical copy taxes and industry shifts—Nintendo’s Mario Kart World and Microsoft’s first-party titles now retail for $80—may justify a higher pricing.

However, Pitchford suggested that publisher 2K Games may choose a lower price to appeal to price-sensitive fans, ensuring accessibility for Borderlands’ 87 million lifetime franchise sales.

He also emphasises the studio philosophy: “We want everyone who buys and plays a Gearbox game to feel they got the better end of the bargain.”

This balance is difficult to strike in a competitive market, as Borderlands 4 is under scrutiny following the mixed reaction of Borderlands 3 and the flop of the Borderlands movie in 2024.

Thoughts

Let’s be honest, the Borderlands 4 price at $80 is just complete bulls**t. The new game looks good and they have done some amazing things this time.

But still, it’s not worth $80 in my opinion. Spending more money and a massive production budget excuses won’t work anymore.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has just proved all the industry wrong and now even gamers are aware of it. Mafia: The Old Country, priced at $50, is another great example of it.
