The Indian men’s hockey team had a historic campaign at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Men in Blue clinched the gold medal in the men’s hockey event, defending the title which they had won at the Hangzhou 2022 Games.
Goals from Harmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra secured a 5-1 win against Malaysia in the final.

The Men in Blue became the first team to defend their men’s hockey title at the Asian Games. As a result, each player received a cash prize of INR 11 lakh each—as announced by Hockey India (HI).
However, the latest gold medal was a big achievement for a long-serving member of the Indian team, as the legendary midfielder Manpreet Singh made Asian Games history at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

Manpreet was part of the Indian men’s hockey team that clinched gold at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, beating Malaysia 5-1 in the final. The midfielder from Jalandhar has been one of the most reliable players for the Men in Blue, making more than 430 appearances.
The latest gold medal marked the third Asian Games gold won by Manpreet. He was also a part of the gold-winning teams at the 2014 Incheon Games and the 2022 Hangzhou Games. In 2014, India defeated Pakistan on penalties in the final. In 2022, India beat Japan 5-1 in the final.
The three gold medals made Manpreet the most successful men’s hockey player in Asian Games history and the only player to have won three gold medals at the tournament.

The player himself expressed his happiness at the historic gold medal defence.
“This gold medal was very important for us. After winning gold at the Asian Games, we secured direct qualification for the Olympics. Both the men’s and women’s teams have qualified for LA from here, so it has been a significant achievement for us,” Manpreet told ANI.
“I’ll dedicate this medal to my family – the people I’ve been living far away from. I have two daughters. I’ll do something special for the younger one, Evelyn.”
