August in the Indian sports calendar will witness several key events.

Indian athletes delivered a stellar performance in July 2025, leading the nation to earn a top-20 spot at the recently concluded FISU World University Games. India won a total of 12 medals in the tournament, including 2 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

The inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, held in July, saw a remarkable moment when the two-time Olympic medallist won gold at the event held in his honour.

What made the event even more memorable was the presence of 14,593 fans at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka, to cheer on the track and field icon.

Looking ahead to August, many major sporting tournaments are set to take place across various disciplines, including the Wanda Diamond League legs and Final, the BWF World Championships, and the US Open are some prominent competitions that are scheduled to take place.

On that note, let’s look at the Indian calendar for August in detail-

Key events to take place in August Sports Calendar-

Aquatics

Indian swimmers are competing at the World Aquatics Championships 2025, to be held in Singapore from July 11 to August 3. Benedicton Rohit, Sajan Prakash, and Aryan Nehra are some of the swimmers who are a part of India’s squad at the Worlds.

  • July 26-22 August: World Aquatics Masters Championships
  • August 19-24: World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships

Archery

Five archers will represent India in the World Games 2025 to be held in Chengdu, China. Some top archers set to feature are Abhishek Verma, Rishabh Yadav, Rakesh Kumar, and Parneet Kaur at the tournament.

Meanwhile, many young archers from India will represent the nation at the World Archery Youth Championships in Winnipeg, Canada, in August.

Athletics

Several international and domestic track and field events are set to take center stage in August. While the Diamond League will draw global attention, Indian athletics fans will be closely following the National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships and the Indian Open, a World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour event, two of the biggest competitions taking place in the country.

Badminton

Indian shuttlers, including Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, are currently in action at the Macau Open, a BWF Super 300 event.

However, all eyes of Indian badminton fans will be on the BWF World Championships, where India last earned a medal in the form of bronze through HS Prannoy in the men’s singles at the 2023 edition.

Billiards

Billiards is slated to be held at the World Games in China, where a total of four players from India are expected to compete in the sport.

Basketball

India has been drawn in Group C alongside China, Jordan and host Saudi Arabia at the FIBA Asia Cup Men’s tournament. 

  • August 5-17: FIBA Men’s Asia Cup

Boxing

Below are some of the boxing events to look forward to in August, featuring Indian boxers –

  • July 30-12 August: Asian Boxing U19 and U22 Championships
  • TBD: World Boxing Cup Stage 3 
  • August-September (Dates TBD): Open Federation Cup

Chess

After Divya Deshmukh‘s victory at the Women’s Chess World Cup 2025, Indian fans will now look forward to one of the major tournaments, the FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad in August, where young talents will try to showcase their talent.

Here are some of the events to watch out for in the upcoming month:

  • August 1-9: Asian Amateur Chess Championship
  • August 6-15: Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters
  • August 16-23: FIDE World Youth U16 Olympiad

Cricket

With England holding a 2-1 lead in the Test series, India will be looking to stage a comeback in the final match at The Oval and level the series to finish on a high.

  • August 17-31: India tour of Bangladesh (ODIs & T20Is)

Football

The Durand Cup is the most prominent football tournament currently underway, featuring Indian athletes. The knockout stage, including the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, will be held in August, while the championship match will take place on August 23 in Kolkata.

Hockey

The Indian men’s hockey team will play two important series, first against Australia and then the Asia Cup 2025, which will be held on August 29.

India has won overall three titles at the competition and came third in the last edition (2022) held in Jakarta. Notably, the winner of the event will secure their place at the Men’s Hockey World Cup.

  • August 1-12: Hockey India Junior Women National Championship
  • August 12-23: Hockey India Junior Men National Championship
  • August 8-22: Tour of Australia

Racquetball

In racquetball, Kosetty Jyotheekalyan (men’s singles) and Shilpa Dalvi (women’s singles) will represent India at the World Games 2025. The duo will also team up for the mixed doubles event.

Road and track speed skating

India will have a combined three representatives in Road and track speed skating for the World Games.

Shooting

Two-time Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker will lead a 35-member team at the Asian Shooting Championships to be held in Kazakhstan in April.

Several other leading names, including Swapnil Kusale, Rudrankksh Patil, Saurabh Chaudhary, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Anjum Moudgil and Sift Kaur Samra, will also be aiming for podium finishes at the tournament.

In shotgun events, Ganemat Sekhon, Raiza Dhillon, Maheshwari Chauhan, Anantjeet Singh Naruka and Bhowneesh Mendiratta are some other shooters to watch out for at the championships.

  • August 16-30: Asian Shooting Championships Rifle/ Pistol/ Shotgun

Table Tennis

Harmeet Desai, Manav Thakkar, and Manush Shah are some prominent Indian table tennis stars who will be competing in various competitions in August. Additionally, many rising stars in the sport will also be in action in the month in Youth Contender events.

Tennis

In tennis, the biggest tournament held in August is none other than the US Open, which takes place from August 24 to September 7. Many Indian tennis stars are expected to compete at the final Grand Slam of the year.

Wushu

India will be sending a sole representative in Wushu to the World Games 2025.
