The Spanish skipper's record-breaking appearance was the highlight of yesterday's Euro qualifying fixtures.
Quite a happening evening at the ongoing 2020 UEFA Euro Qualifiers as Italy cruised past Greece to maintain the top position in the Group J. Two goals in the second half from Jorginho and Federico Bernardeschi at the Stadio Olimpico meant Italy are on a seven game unbeaten streak in the qualifiers, nine points off second-placed Finland.
On the other hand, Sweden too handed over a 4-0 lashing to Malta at home to continue closing down the gap between group leaders Spain. The Swedish side had taken a lead in the eleventh minute itself through Marcus Danielson but Sebastian Larsson was the star performer on the night as he scored twice from the spot in the second half before Malta's Andrei Aguis scored an own goal.[KH_ADWORDS type="3" align="center"][/KH_ADWORDS]
However, it was the game at Norway's Ullevaal Stadion that grabbed the headlines as the home side held a mighty Spain to a 1-1 draw thanks to an injury time equaliser from the penalty spot by Joshua King. Saul Niguez had given a lead to the visitors just after the second half had resumed as Robert Moreno's side looked to extend their lead in Group F.
Sergio Ramos was the centre of attention in the game as he surpassed the previous record kept by Iker Casillas to become Spain's most-capped player ever with 168 appearances. The 33 year-old has been one of the most influential players for both the national team as well as Real Madrid domestically and totally deserves the praise.
Spain manager, although unhappy with the draw, took time to congratulate Ramos for his incredible feat saying, "Ramos’ record is incredible."
"I want to congratulate him publicly and hopefully he can give us joy for much longer," he added, as per a report in Fox Sports Asia.
