Calangute Association edge SCC Cavelossim, return to winning ways in GPL
Omkar More shone in the Beachsiders' victory.
Blake Haldankar’s first-half goal helped Calangute Association to edge out Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 1-0 in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.
With this win, Calangute moved up to the 7th position with 11 points, having played nine matches, on the other hand, Cavelossim just has six points from eight matches and sit at the 11th position in the league table.
Cavelossim were struggling at the bottom half of the table as they had managed to register only two wins out of seven played matches. Their recent defeat was against Sporting Clube de Goa in the previous round. Calangute were also in the similar mood after suffering back-to-back defeats at the Dempo SC and Guardian Angel SC in the last two matches.
Following two defeats in the last two matches, both the coaches made few changes to their side where Calangute gaffer Alex Alvares brought back keeper Jason D’Mello in the starting XI, while he also brought in Omkar Satelkar, Bersal Viegas, Yamnursab Pinjar, and Blake Haldankar replacing Omkar More, Mayur Shelkar, Josley Dias and Jayganesh Goltekak in the lineup.
Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes also made the same number of changes bringing back Ashley Araujo and Allwyn Vaz in the playing XI, while he also gave the start to keeper Savio Paes, Filton D’Cunha and Darren Fernandes.
Cavelossim had a very bright start to the match as they were attacking from the start of the match and came close to scoring in the 7th minutes when Mathew Colaco made a diagonal pass to Alvito Miranda in the box but the striker saw his strike was denied by the goalpost.
At the other end, Calangute also had a chance to surge ahead when Leslee Brito found Satelkar in the box but the U-20 forward shot wide from 10yards.
A few minutes later, Cavelossim midfielder Darren was in the commanding position to take his side into the lead when he was just left with rival keeper Jason but the custodian came off his line to clear the danger.
Calangute coach Alvares brought in start striker Omkar More replacing Leslee and the striker would have scored from his first touch, few seconds after coming in but he saw his powerful shot rebound off the crossbar.
However, his presence in the team made the Beachside more potent in the attacking and finally, they opened their account in the added time of the first half when Blake tap in from close to More’s inch-perfect low cross, to take his side into a 1-0 lead at the half-time.
On crossing over, Cavelossim should have levelled the score in the 52nd minutes when Darren shot on the goal from close but keeper Jason brilliantly pushed it for a corner. At the other end, Calangute were once again unlucky not to find the net as this time Bonny Niasso’s shot hit the goal-post with keeper Savio completely out of position.
Calangute once again came close to scoring when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box but keeper Savio made a brilliant save to deny Kouame Joseph shot at the cost of a corner. From the resultant Joston Pereira’s corner, Joseph failed to connect his header from close.
Calangute had two more clear-cut chances in the last few minutes but first More shot wide from close, a few minutes later, Blake nicely set up More with just keeper to beat but the striker’s shot missed the target by few inches.
