Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023: India clinch silver, bronze in women's pole vault

Jyothi Yarraji also smashed her own national record yet again!

India continued its fine run on the second day of the Asian Indoor Athletic Championships 2023, Astana. Pavithra Vengatesh and Reliance HPC athlete Rosy Meena Paulraj won silver and bronze respectively in the women's pole vault event. Jyothi Yarraji continued her fine form and smashed her own National Record yet again in the 60m hurdles. India’s medal tally after the end of day 2 at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships - one gold medal, four silver medals, and one bronze medal.

Women's Pole Vault: Pavithra Vengatesh wins silver, Rosy Meena Paulraj bronze

Pavithra cleared 4m to win the silver medal, missing out on the gold medal by the barest of margins. Maya Nasu of Japan won the gold medal with the same height of 4.00m, but Pavithra had taken an extra attempt to cross the 3.80m which resulted in her second-place finish.

The event started at 3.40m but Pavithra started her attempts only from 3.80m. In the end, both Maya Nasu and Pavitra couldn’t cross the 4.10m barrier. Rosy Meena Paulraj started from 3.60m and had three good jumps. She crossed the 3.90m hurdle on the third attempt helping her win the bronze medal.

Jyothi Yarraji breaks National Record and qualifies for the finals 

Jyothi Yarraji has a knack for breaking records for fun. She started the 2023 season breaking the seven-year-old National record and in a span of three weeks has broken her own record twice in 60m hurdles. The 23-year-old finished first overall with a timing of 8.16 seconds and qualified for the finals scheduled on February 12, which is also the last event of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships.

Men’s 60m

Elakkiadasan (6.77 seconds) and Amlan Borgohain (6.85 seconds) finished ninth and eleventh respectively in the men’s 60m. 

Women’s Triple Jump 

Poorva Sawant finished fourth with a jump of 13.06m and Sheena Varkey (12.30m) finished seventh. Sharifa Davronova claimed the gold medal in jumping 13.98m followed by Mariko Morimoto (13.66m) and Chen Ting (13.52m).

Women’s Shot put

Abha Khatua finished fifth (14.80m) overall among the seven athletes. The shot put athlete failed to maintain consistency committing three foul throws.

On the final day, the 2021 World Junior silver medallist Shaili Singh will be in action along with pole vault national record holder Siva Subramanium. The last event of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships will be the women’s 60m hurdles which will feature Jyothi Yarraji.
