Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023: Jeswin Aldrin, Jyothi Yarraji win silver medals

Both athletes also rewrote their own National Records in their respective events.

India ended the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 on a bright note winning one gold medal, six silver medals, and one bronze medal. Jyothi Yarraji and Jeswin Aldrin added two more silver medals to India’s medal tally on the final day with both athletes breaking their own National Records in the 60m hurdles and Long Jump events respectively. Shaili Singh and Siva Subramani finished a credible fifth in Long Jump and Pole Vault.

This was overall a good start to the 2023 season with athletes breaking several national records in their respective events.

Jeswin Aldrin wins silver medal in Long Jump

22-year-old Jeswin Aldrin continued from where he left off in the heats and won the silver medal by jumping a distance of 7.97m breaking his own National Record in a space of two days. Of the six attempts, four were foul jumps and he registered 7.97m and 7.82m respectively in the remaining two jumps. Jeswin committed five fouls in the 2022 Inter-State Athletic Championships in Chennai but bounced back strongly to claim the gold at the National Games.

Muhammed Anees Yahiya couldn’t qualify for the finals, finishing overall ninth in the heats.

Jyothi Yarraji wins silver medal in 60m hurdles

Jyothi Yarraji is breaking National Records for fun and has broken the National Record in 60m hurdles five times in a space of three weeks (twice at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships). She finished the race with a timing of 8.13 secs and claimed the silver medal. Jyoti’s previous record stood at 8.16 sec which she created in the heats.

Women’s High Jump

Abhinaya Shetty finished joint sixth along with Shao Yuqi of China with a jump of 1.75m. Abhinaya started her attempt from 1.60m and made three successive jumps failing to clear 1.80m. Kazakhstan swept the podium winning all three medals on offer.

Women’s Long Jump

2021 World Junior silver medallist Shaili Singh finished fifth with a best jump of 6.27m. Shaili Singh has started the 2023 season on a positive note having lost most of her time due to injuries in the past year.

Men’s Pole Vault

National Record holder Siva Subramani finishes a credible fifth with a best jump of 5.15m. Prasanth Kanhaiya couldn't make much impact as he did not register a score failing to cross the bar in three successive instances at the 4.80m mark. 

Men’s High Jump

Sarvesh Anil Kushare from Maharashtra finished sixth with the best jump of 2.20m. Sarvesh was jumping consistently above the 2.25m in the 2022 edition but couldn't replicate the same here.
