The Indian Independence day in 2021 will be marked by something more than just colours and parades. According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to invite India’s entire Olympic contingent, which participated at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, as Special guests at the Red Fort on August 15. The athletes, who represent the best of Indian sports, will get a chance to meet and interact with PM Modi personally.
The Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has been very vocal with his support for the Indian Olympic contingent on social media, especially through numerous tweets.
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister tweeted about watching the Indian men's hockey team's match, when the Men in Blue faced Belgium in a tough battle in the semifinals. The statesman wrote that he was watching the game LIVE and revealed his pride for the squad's skills.
While the Indian team were beaten against Belgium, the Prime Minister tweeted words of compensation for the members. "Wins and losses are a part of life. Our Men’s Hockey Team at #Tokyo2020 gave their best and that is what counts. Wishing the Team the very best for the next match and their future endeavours. India is proud of our players," PM Modi wrote on Twitter.
The Indian contingent have surprised many fans and pundits alike at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, for different reasons. They have already been assured of two medals, with Mirabai Chanu and PV Sindhu winning a silver and a bronze respectively. Meanwhile, boxer Lovlina Borgohain has assured a medal finish, after she qualified for the semifinals of her weight category in boxing.
Apart from the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics, who are set to be special guests after receiving invitations from PM Modi, the Indian Independence Day in 2021 will not see a chief guest, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
