Ennio Falco had an existing contract valid until September 2021.

Ennio Falco, India’s skeet coach, has resigned after the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) rejected his plea to have a say in the selection of athletes for the national team. The Italian international had demanded a policy-shift from NRAI’s approach of picking players on the basis of rankings. Falco was critical of the process of conducting a national trial for selecting the squad, as he believes that one poor shot should not be detrimental to the athlete’s career.

“It might be important for the national federation, but a change in policy is a must. If a good shooter misses one target, it could make or break his career. It can impact the job of the coach too. In my country, there are no trials,” the 1996 Atlanta Olympics champion stated. Speaking on his move ahead, Falco further added, “It is time to think and move on. I’ll be joining the new team (Qatar) shortly.”

Falco had officially submitted his resignation letter last month. However, the NRAI hasn’t yet accepted his request and is persuading him to continue his stint with the national team. The 52-year-old’s existing contract is valid until September 2021 as it was renewed in August 2020. One of the national coaches aware of this situation revealed that the Italian had demanded a raise in his salary too.

“If he doesn’t have a right to select a shooter in the team then his salary should be 2000 euros (approx. R1.75 lakh) per day, which would be thrice his current numeration of 600 euros (approx. R52,000) per day,” the coach said to Hindustan Times. Though NRAI president Raninder Singh remained unresponsive, an unnamed international shooter confided to Hindustan Times that a change in policy would be difficult to implement. “It’s a measurable sport. A shooter on the fringes, even if the difference between the top and fourth or fifth-ranked is marginal, can’t get preference,” the shooter has been quoted in the report.

In a similar development, Volker Herrmann, the High Performance Director of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) resigned from his post. In an elaborate post on Facebook, Herrmann claimed that he “could not any longer meet the self-imposed expectations coming along with the role of AFI’s high-performance director.” The departure of Falco and Hermann ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 from their respective positions is arguably a worrisome sign, particularly because both of them were reportedly miffed with their respective federations.
