World Athletics U-20 Championships Day 3 Live: Ajai and Jay begin medal quest

6:08 PM That concludes all the action from Day 3 of the World U-20 Athletics Championships. Nandini Agasara bowed out in the semi-finals of the women's 100m hurdles. Tejas Shirse, Pooja, Sunil Joliya and Shanmuga Srinivas Nalubothu failed to clear the first hurdle in their respective events.

In the men's javelin throw final, Kunwer Ajai Raj Singh Rana and Jay Kumar delivered promising performances but ultimately fell short. Rana finished in 5th place with Jay coming 6th. The best performance of the day came from India's biggest medal prospect, Shaili Singh in the women's long jump qualification round. The 17-year-old topped the charts across both groups with a fantastic jump of 6.40m to secure automatic qualification with her final jump.

6:00 PM Men's Javelin Throw Final: Finland's Janne Laspa wins the gold medal in the men's javelin throw final. Kunwer Ajai Raj Singh Rana finishes in 5th place, whereas Jay Kumar finishes 6th. They will only get better in the years to come.

5:56 PM Men's Javelin Throw Final: Rana's final attempt is a foul throw. However, it was a promising performance from him today. He will finish in 5th place in the final.

12:56 PM Women's 1500m: We will now shift our attention towards women's 1500m heats. India's Pooja will compete in this event.

12:52 PM Men's 110m hurdles: Such good was the quality of Heat 4 that even sixth-placed Jorim Bangue of Cameroon also makes it through to the next round owing to superior timing.

12:04 PM Women's 100m hurdles: All eyes will soon be on India's Nandini Agasara in the upcoming Heat 4. There will be a total of seven participants and the Indian girl will need to finish in the top four for automatic qualification.

12:00 PM Women's 100m hurdles: Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland setting a mark of 13.30, to emerge victorious in Heat 3.

11:55 AM Women's 100m hurdles: A blistering Heat 2 finishes with Jamaica's Ackera Nugent taking victory in just 13.35.

11:38 AM Nandini Agasara will begin the day's action for the Indian contingent at the World Athletics U-20 Championships. She will participate in the women's 100m hurdles heats. Hailing from Telangana, Agasara had clocked 13.88 seconds at the Federation Cup earlier this year. She then bettered her timing with 13.70 seconds at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. Tejas Shirse will be the sole representative for India in the Men’s 110m hurdles. He clocked 13.78 seconds at the Indian U20 Championships held in Sangrur.

Medal prospects Shaili Singh and Kunwer Ajay Raj Singh Rana in action

Pooja will be in action in the women's 1500m heats. She won the U20 Indian Championships and clocked 4:23.38 which helped her secure a berth at the World Athletics U-20 Championships. One of India’s top medal prospects in this event, Shaili Singh is a product of the Anju Bobby George Foundation. The 17-year-old long jumper is coached by the legendary Robert Robby George. Her longest jump of 6.48m puts her in fifth among the competition at the Junior Championships. Shaili will look to start well and carry that momentum to the finals of the World Athletics U-20 Championships.

Shanmuga Nalubothu will be India’s only representative at the Men’s 200m. His best timing came at the Indian U-20 Championships when he clocked 21.02. Both Kunwer Ajai Raj Singh Rana and Jay Kumar qualified for the World Athletics U-20 Championships Javelin throw finals after finishing sixth and seventh in the qualifiers respectively. The Indian duo will look to up the ante in the finals in search of a medal. Steeplechaser Sunil Joliya will look to shine at the World U-20 Athletics Championships. His first aim will be to do well at the heats and qualify for the finals.
