Top four men's singles players fastest to reach 30 wins in Grand Slams Open Era

These individuals raced towards achieving 30 wins at the toughest tournaments that the sport has to offer.

The Grand Slams are the biggest platform (barring the Olympics) and the most difficult tournaments in tennis. Every individual dreams of contesting in one of them and winning them is a feat that only the exceptional manage to achieve. The effort needed to better the opponent takes a herculean effort due to the level of the competition.

It is extremely tough for the majority of the players to even secure qualification into the main round of a Grand Slam but the elite players regularly contest in them due to their reputation. Carlos Alcaraz, for instance, won his 30th Grand Slam contest and was one of the fastest players to achieve this feat. It is an incredible feat for Carlos Alcaraz as some tennis players show a preference for a particular Grand Slam and record a high number of wins due to the surface on which they are held. 

Some prefer the clay court of the French Open, the grass courts of Wimbledon, or the hard courts of the Australian Open and the US Open. However, only exceptional players excel at all of them and quickly collect a high number of match wins and Grand Slams. Keeping the lens on men’s tennis, here is a look at the players, including Carlos Alcaraz, who were the fastest to 30 Grand Slam wins.

Carlos Alcaraz – 38 matches

Carlos Alcaraz took 38 matches in order to complete 30 wins at Grand Slam tournaments. The Spaniard is the current World No.1 in men’s tennis rankings by ATP. He is only 20 years old and has a promising career ahead of him.

Carlos Alcaraz is competing at the 2023 Wimbledon, aiming to win his second Grand Slam title. He already has a US Open title which he won in 2022. The future is bright for Alcaraz who may go on to dominate men’s tennis for multiple years.

Mats Wilander – 37 matches

Mats Wilander recorded 30 Grand Slam wins in 37 matches during his career, showing promise early on. He is regarded as one of the greatest European tennis players of all time. The Swede won seven Grand Slam singles titles during his illustrious career. 

While Mats Wilander failed to win the singles title at Wimbledon, he did win the competition in the doubles category. He finished his career with 33 titles and a 72% win rate. As it stands, he is the second-fastest (joint) to 30 Grand Slam wins in men’s tennis.

Rafael Nadal – 37 matches

Rafael Nadal also took 37 matches to record 30 wins at Grand Slams. The ‘King of Clay’ holds the record for winning the most number of French Open singles titles at 14! The 22-time Grand Slam winner is one of the two players in men’s singles to win the Career Golden Slam among other records.

Rafael Nadal was exceptional from an early age. His potential was always high and the Spaniard went on to exceed all expectations. Winning 30 Grand Slam matches within 37 tries was a sign of what was to come from Nadal.

Boris Becker – 36 matches

Boris Becker holds the record for winning 30 Grand Slam matches in the least amount of time. It took the legendary player only 36 matches to win 30 contests. The former World No.1 from Germany was one of the greatest players of his generation and won multiple titles.

Boris Becker went on to win six Grand Slam titles but the French Open trophy eluded him. He won 49 titles during his career overall and finished with a (76.9%) win percentage.
