Novak Djokovic fined heavily for smashing racquet during Wimbledon 2023 final
Carlos Alcaraz claimed his second grand slam title by defeating the Serbian.
Serbia's top ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic has been imposed of a heavy fine for smashing his racket onto the wooden net pole during the men's singles final against Carlos Alcaraz at the Wimbledon Championships 2023. The incident occurred in the fifth set after the 23-time Grand Slam winner lost his own service game handing the youngster from Spain the lead.
The umpire soon after the incident issued Novak Djokovic a warning for violating the code of conduct. The reports suggests that Djokovic will be fined 6,117 pounds from his runner-up prize money. This was the seven-time Wimbledon champion's second warning with the previous one being given for time violation. The Serbian was constantly serving late and could be seen violating the shot clock timing of 25 seconds. The umpire after several breaches, finally gave Djokovic a warning.
Djokovic about his two code violations iterated, "There's not much to talk about that. Second code violation was frustration. I had break points in the second game. Yeah, just tough, tough couple of points."
Earlier in 2020, Djokovic was disqualified from US Open after he unintentionally stuck the ball, hitting the line judge.
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in five sets and recorded his maiden Wimbledon Grand Slam title and overall his second GS title. Djokovic started the match on a great note winning the opening set (6-1) but couldn't hold onto the momentum with Alcaraz using his power to perfection. With this win the Serbian will retain his second spot whereas Carlos Alcaraz shall continue to hold on to his top spot.
The action will now shift to hard courts with the last grand slam - US Open set to begin at the end of next month.
