India has announced its five-member squad for the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup 2024, with top-ranked Indian women’s singles tennis player Ankita Raina leading the team. The tournament is set to commence on April 8, with the Asia-Oceania Group I matches taking place in Changsha, China.

Ankita Raina, currently ranked world No. 226, will spearhead of the Indian tennis team. The squad also includes Sahaja Yamalapalli (rank 329), Shrivalli Bhamidipaty (rank 482), Rutuja Bhosale (rank 333), and Prarthana Thombare. Vaidehi Chaudhari, world No. 498 in singles, has been selected as the reserve player. The team will be captained by former Indian tennis player Shalini Thakur Chawla.

The Billie Jean King Cup, launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), is the world’s largest annual women’s international team sports competition in terms of the number of nations that compete. The name was changed to the Fed Cup in 1995, and again in September 2020 in honor of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King. The Tournament is women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup.

India will be competing against hosts China, Chinese Taipei, Pacific Oceania, and the Republic of Korea in the group phase matches. The top two teams from the Asia-Oceania Group I will qualify for the play-offs, while the bottom two will be relegated to the Asia-Oceania Group II for the following year.
