Carlos Alcaraz's journey to Wimbledon 2025 final

Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is looking to complete a three-peat.

Starting the tournament as the favourite to win the title, Carlos Alcaraz has played like a two-time winner, completely ruthless, and dominating when it mattered the most. Coming on the back of winning three consecutive titles, the Spaniard displayed a masterclass on how to manage his body to sustain for two weeks.

He started slowly against the lower ranked opponents in the first few rounds and elevated his game with every passing stage. Let’s take a look at his journey to the Wimbledon 2025 final.

First Round – Fabio Fognini

Alcaraz’s start to his Wimbledon 2025 campaign wasn’t on expected lines, as he struggled with inconsistencies against lower ranked opponents. Fabio Fognini, a 38-year-old, was expected to retire at the end of this season, and not many would have expected a four-hour marathon battle lined up.

But much to the surprise of everyone, the Italian exceeded expectations and was aided by the Spaniard’s inability to execute his forehand winners and poor serving. Eventually, Fognini ran out of gas, but stretching Alcaraz to five sets was a feat in itself for the Italian, who later announced his retirement from the sport.

Second Round – Oliver Tarvet

Qualifier Oliver Tarvet, a college student, was always going to face an uphill battle against the five-time Grand Slam champion. Despite his best efforts, the Brit couldn’t take a set off Alcaraz, who broke Tarvet’s serve six times while losing his own just twice, ultimately cruising to a comfortable straight-sets victory.

Third Round – Jan Lennard Struff

Alcaraz’s struggles continued as he narrowly survived a four-set battle against Jan-Lennard Struff, playing well below his usual high standards. After a strong start, the Spaniard dropped the second set and allowed the momentum to shift.

Although the German had opportunities, converting just 2 of 5 break points and failing to capitalize on crucial moments ultimately cost him, allowing Alcaraz to fight another day.

Fourth Round – Andrey Rubelv

The round of 16 clash marked the beginning of Alcaraz’s domination. After three rather unusual outings from the two-time Wimbledon winner, Andrey Rubelv was at the receiving end of an absolute masterclass from the Spaniard.

The Russian started off well, with an early 1-3 lead, but Alcaraz quickly levelled terms and forced a tiebreaker.

When things seemed to be going in Alcaraz’s direction, Rublev clutched right at the end to seal the opening set. However, post that, it was Alcaraz domination, as he outclassed Rublev, despite the Russian’s rather strong performance.

It was a strong statement to the rest of the field, that the title defense is well and truly on for Alcaraz.

Quarter-final – Cameron Norrie

The 22-year-old meant business against Cameron Norrie in his quarter-final contest, and wasn’t messing around. The local hope got thrashed in an easy straight sets win. The fact that Norrie was unable to break Alcaraz’s serve throughout the match shows how one-sided this match was.

Semi-final – Taylor Fritz

Alcaraz was tested in the semi-finals against the fourth best player on grass, amongst the active pool of ATP players. The start was far from ideal for the American, who was broken in the very first game and could not recover.

However, he did well to hang in, during the second set, and seized onto a rare shift in focus from Alcaraz, breaking and levelling things.

Alcaraz though wasn’t bogged down with the setback, as he managed to clinch the second set, and saved set points in the fourth set tiebreak, to comeback from 4-6, to eventually secure his spot in the Wimbledon final for a third straight time.

Final: Jannik Sinner (TBP)

Alcaraz is a strong favourite for his final against Jannik Sinner, having emerged victorious in the duo’s past five meetings. He is the best player on grass currently and has defeated Djokovic at his prime in 2023.

Moreover, his recent Roland Garros triumph gives him a psychological advantage, and Sinner’s elbow injury could possibly aggravate in a situation where the match goes the distance.
