This is Lorenzo Musetti’s best-ever performance at ATP 1000 Masters level tournaments.
Lorenzo Musetti’s victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas moves him a step closer to becoming the first Italian to make the championship round at Monte Carlo Masters since compatriot Fabio Fognini in 2019.
Musetti ended three-time winner and defending champion Tsitsipas’ domination in Monaco to make the last four at the Masters event for the first time. The Italian World No. #16 booked a semi-final berth for his best finish at the ATP 1000 event with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Tsitsipas. Musetti, who hails from Italy’s Tuscany, proved to be a tough competitor as he saved 14 of 17 breakpoints faced.
A similar story unfolded during Fognini’s 2019 title run when he handed defending champion Rafael Nadal a defeat in the semis. Nadal was on the verge of a fourth successive title on that occasion.
Musetti, 23, became the first player born in 2002 to make the last four at a Masters event after claiming victory over the defending champion. It is also the No. 13 seed’s maiden appearance in an ATP 1000 semi-final. Musetti recorded his first win on clay courts and his first from five meetings against the Greek.
He will be up against Alex de Minaur for a chance to play for the trophy. De Minaur’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Grigor Dimitrov came in just 45 minutes. The World No. #10 from Sydney is up three spots in the live rankings after the win against Dimitrov. De Minaur’s third straight win over Dimitrov makes him the first Australian since John Alexander in 1979 to make the semi-finals at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
The other scheduled semi-final between Carlos Alcaraz and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina too, marks the first semi-final clash between two Spaniards since 2010. That year Nadal took on countryman David Ferrer, emerging victorious with a 6-2, 6-3 scoreline. The title round was another all-Spanish affair between Nadal and Fernando Verdasco, where the former won 6-0, 6-1 for his sixth straight title at the venue.

Heading back to Musetti, the Italian made four finals last season but failed to win any of them. He is slated to make his first semi-final since losing in Vienna last season to Jack Draper. Musetti is up three places to No. 13 in the live rankings after scoring an upset win over Tsitsipas.
He could join his more illustrious compatriot, Jannik Sinner, in the ATP Top 10 should he lift the Monte Carlo Masters trophy on Sunday.
