Alcaraz is a two-time defending champion at the desert.

The reigning Indian Wells Open winner, Carlos Alcaraz, returns to California as the top contender for the title. Spaniard enjoyed his time here, defeating Daniil Medvedev both times to clinch the title.

Alcaraz is seeded second but has the best chance among his companions, with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner banned for three months following his suspension. Alexander Zverev, the top seed, has been woefully out of form. The 21-year-old’s nemesis and a five-time winner at the BNP Paribas Open, Novak Djokovic, continues to battle injury concerns, and his last stint at the Qatar Open ended in the first round.

With all signs pointing toward a third straight win at the desert, Carlos Alcaraz will be eager to script history at the Wells. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five records he could break during the ATP-1000 tournament.

5. Highest win percentage at Indian Wells

Carlos Alcaraz is 16-2 at the desert, with his last defeat coming in 2022 to Rafael Nadal. With a near 89% success rate, the Spaniard has the best track record for any singles player in the event’s history. In the upcoming edition, Alcaraz will look to consolidate his position at the top as he bids for a three-peat.

4. Youngest Three-Time Indian Wells Champion

Only five players have won the Indian Wells thrice or more- Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Jimmy Connors, and Michael Chang.

Federer is the youngest to have accomplished the feat, as the Swiss maestro was only 24 when he won in 2006. Chang was 25, Nadal 26, and the Serbian was 28 years old; hence, at 21, Carlos Alcaraz stands a chance to be the youngest player to complete a three-peat.

3. Most Titles at Indian Wells by a Spanish Player

Alcaraz currently trails Spanish icon Rafael Nadal. Nadal has three titles at the desert, but Alcaraz has the golden opportunity to level terms. The 22-time Grand Slam winner last won the ATP-1000 event in 2013. Interestingly, Nadal cut short Alcaraz’s ambitions during the 2022 Indian Wells semi-final round but was stunned by 20th seed Taylor Fritz in the final.

2. The second player born in the 2000s with the most ATP titles

Alcaraz began the 2025 calendar year with 16 titles and won the ATP Rotterdam Challenge to edge closer to Jannik Sinner’s tally of 19. The Spaniard has a chance not only to equal the Italian’s record but also to surpass it. Triumphs at the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells and Miami Open) will allow him to match Sinner. However, due to the 23-year ongoing three month ban, Alcaraz could certainly take the lead.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are currently tied at five for the most BNP Paribas title victories. Both tennis legends also hold the record for most consecutive titles, Federer from 2004-06 and 2017-19, while Djokovic from 2014-16. With consistent wins in California over the past few seasons, the 21-year-old Spanish sensation could join the greats of this game if he wins the 2025 edition.
