Jannik Sinner arrives at Wimbledon 2024 as the World No. 1.

In the opening round of the Wimbledon 2024, top-seeded Jannik Sinner will take against Yannick Hanfmann of Germany, ranked 95th in the world. Sinner had the best possible preparations for the championships by winning his first-ever grass championship at Halle Open. The resurgence shown by the World No. #1 to claim a title after suffering a heartbreaking loss in the semis of the French Open.

Sinner, who surged to the top of the ATP rankings following the clay-court major, will be entering the Grand Slam as World No. #1. This year has been his best season starting from the Australian Open triumph to reaching the semifinals in every tournament he has competed in entirety. His next challenge will be in the Grass courts of Wimbledon.

The Italian’s opponent in the first round will be Yannick Hanfmann. The German doesn’t have the reputation of being the most intimidating opponent on grass going into this match. Coming into the competition, the German qualified for the main draw only once in three attempts. Hanfmann has made it to the main draw of London and will look to make a mark.

Jannik Sinner vs Yannick Hanfmann preview

As the top seed going into a Slam, Sinner begins his Wimbledon aspirations with a well-earned honor that recognizes his year-round consistency. Apart from a blip due to an injury in the Madrid Open, the Italian has been flawless demonstrating his extraordinary dependability. The cherry on the cake was the final at Down Under when he kept the focus precisely to get to the title.

The 22-year-old’s grass-court season has gone as planned and he will look to make amends for the semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic in the previous year’s championships. It is going to be a tough challenge given the fact that he has been given a tricky draw as could face the 2021 Wimbledon Runner-Up Matteo Berrettini in the second round.

He would want to first on a positive note with his date against Hanfmann. The 32-year-old has been on a poor run of form in Grand Slams and a first-round loss in the French Open last month. The German had early exits in the Wimbledon in the last two years and his aim will be to register his maiden win in London, although it is highly unlikely.

Prediction

It is not often one could see a top-seed player getting knocked out in the first round. Monday is not anticipated to be any different as the 32-year-old Hanfmann, who has only one victory on grass this year, could spring a surprise. While you never say never in sports, the German will have to overcome one of the title favourites in this year’s Championships, where winning a set against the top seed will be difficult.

The German does have a potent weapon in the form of serve but Sinner will be cautious of the 32-year-old’s strong striking ability and his aggressive shot-making. The World No. #1 is one of the finest returners on the circuit and will easily overcome his German counterpart and that might be the result on Monday.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
